What's the benefit from an electric water pump? Is it just freeing up another belt-driven item, or is there something more?

It free's up HP and torque, and makes the bay look a little cooler.

It seems like installation is fairly easy & straightforward. Hopefully it won't be like my old '88 5.0 - the freaking think was heat welded to the block when it died...

Also, the flow is constant. With the belt driven water pump, it pushes slow at idle, and way fast at high RPMs.

When you install one of those, do you have to change the belt for a shorter one ?

Is a more effective altenator recommended ?

Can it be used with U/D pullies and be reliable ?

I've been wondering a lot of things about this little thing lately so thanks for you help.

I was thinking about getting one for my car, does anybody know for SURE what the normal gains is for hp and tq. I find it hard to believe the ads that says 15hp, also what brands are the best, hotmustang331 your opinion would be great.

I have seen estimated gains of UP TO 30hp from switching to an electric water pump. As it removes the belt from the water bump and frees up some horsepower that was originally being robbed from the belt and pullies.

I would like to find some good aftermarket ones though, if someone knows soem good companies let me know. I want to do a coolant flush and water pump change this summer if i can.

No. Most electric water pumps have a dummy pulley ring that freewheels so the same belt can be utilized.

No. They don't draw a lot of amps.

Sure... since it's not belt driven it doesn't care whether you have U/D pulleys or not.

30!? I've never seen claims that high... must have been one seriously inefficient belt driven water pump! Normally the gain is 8-15HP.

Well i saw a commericial here in technical school for electric water pumps, and they were claiming up to 30. So yeah of course that depends on make and models. For mustangs yeah i think i've heard around 15hp gains. Not sure if that is rearwheel or not. Im guessing NOT.

Hmm, interesting. Seems like this would be a good mod to do while doing U/D Pullies to see a gain of almost 15-16rwhp combined. Whats a good company to go with for the Electric Water Pump

hotmustang331, where you at?

I'd say the pump would give you 8-10 WHP max. How much those things run anyway?

I personally wouldn't run one on a daily driver. They are more suited for race cars or weekend cruisers. Not sure they can withstand the abuse of daily driving such as sitting in traffic on 90 degree days with the A/C cranking. They are rather expensive

I would also check out RPM outlet. I have one and it is great. If you use underdrives you will need a shorter belt. As for a daily driver it is great. In the winter time the car heats up much quicker and in the summer the car stays cooler in stop and go traffic. Mine has the idler on it a it is a cool looking idler. Worth the money in my book.

Why would city driving be hard on a water pump, electric or belt driven?

QFT.

Personally I say leave the electric pumps for racers and weekend warriors. You want the reliability of a mechanical pump on your DD.
