What's the benefit from an electric water pump? Is it just freeing up another belt-driven item, or is there something more?

No. Most electric water pumps have a dummy pulley ring that freewheels so the same belt can be utilized.MustHang said:When you install one of those, do you have to change the belt for a shorter one ?
No. They don't draw a lot of amps.MustHang said:Is a more effective altenator recommended ?
Sure... since it's not belt driven it doesn't care whether you have U/D pulleys or not.MustHang said:Can it be used with U/D pullies and be reliable ?
30!? I've never seen claims that high... must have been one seriously inefficient belt driven water pump! Normally the gain is 8-15HP.UDTBadkarma said:I have seen estimated gains of UP TO 30hp from switching to an electric water pump.
UDTBadkarma said:Well i saw a commericial here in technical school for electric water pumps, and they were claiming up to 30. So yeah of course that depends on make and models. For mustangs yeah i think i've heard around 15hp gains. Not sure if that is rearwheel or not. Im guessing NOT.

Did you feel a decent power gain from them?D'SDOUBLEOGT said:I would also check out RPM outlet. I have one and it is great. If you use underdrives you will need a shorter belt. As for a daily driver it is great. In the winter time the car heats up much quicker and in the summer the car stays cooler in stop and go traffic. Mine has the idler on it a it is a cool looking idler. Worth the money in my book.
Why would city driving be hard on a water pump, electric or belt driven?Mustang5L5 said:I personally wouldn't run one on a daily driver. They are more suited for race cars or weekend cruisers. Not sure they can withstand the abuse of daily driving such as sitting in traffic on 90 degree days with the A/C cranking. They are rather expensive
