by 5.4 I hope you mean a 331 stroker 302....

The 5.4 (esp. in our half the planet) is ok unless its a GT(40)/lightning/07 mustang cobra they are not really that great IMHO. You will have a much better trq. curve and plenty of hp for track events. Now if your going to use some Aussi 5.4 do tell....and post pics for us to drool over.

If you did decide to go with an exploder 5.0 setup with no dizzy I am preaty sure the tweecer software now supports that computer. But really the stock dizzy is fine on the mustang for the amount of effort to change it out you wont gain a whole lot over it. The dizzy in the late model 5.0 is preaty durable and more than accurate enough to make as much power as you want.

Top fuel dragsters have distributors, I don't see why it would be worth changing to something else. All the reasons Monsterbishi had listed are too insignificant to spend time and money with.

My take on it: If they can turn close to 9000 RPM for 500 miles in NASCAR racing, what is left to improve? Just my opinion.

Too many moving parts, not as accurate since it's susceptible to gear and chain wear, extra rotational mass. And it's quicker to change out parts on a crank trigger system too, last thing you want to worry about on race day is mucking around setting the timing on a dizzy when you only have a 40 minute service.

If you decide to keep the OEM computer you will need a tuner, like the tweecer, and if you want to make changes to the spark tables, it's only a click away. No need for a timing light; I haven't touched mine in a couple years. It literally takes seconds to make changes, especially if you are making global changes.

But I am all about precision, and if you are willing to go as far as you say, then I suppose the more custom your car is the better for you. Personally, in some ways I wish I didn't go the path I did, since I cannot buy many parts at local parts stores anymore But that is the price you pay for power I suppose.
