I just got my stock, tired old 302 disassembled and ready to go to the machine shop. So far it'd getting bored .30 over, new cam bearings, and freeze plugs installed. My questions are... Do I need to get anything done to the crank, or if i get a new crank... the main caps??? The shop is pressuring me to buy the pistons and whatever else so they can install it... but I wanted to do that myself. Also I wanted to save the money. What do I need to know to assemble the engine correctly after the machine work is done? The combo i have for it so far is GT40P heads with beefier valve springs, will probably get them ported and polished before install... Cobra upper & lower intake, and B303 cam... help/opinions are appreciated THX

I would go ahead and let the machine shop put it together for you. Im in the same situation as you, but im getting a 331 stroker kit comes with everthing you need.

i'd rather put my own engine together myself. you learn more, get more expierence with your car, and nothing beats the feeling of when u first start the engine, and hear it roar knowing that YOU did that.

let the shop clean and bore the block etc.. if u want to assemble yourself. DO IT, i did and it was a blast.

all the work i had my machinist do was, clean and hone block, cam bearings, plugs. and he freshened up a set of thumpers i bought. i did the rest myself.

if your crank is in good shape no wear. reuse it! no need to get it turned, for just a street application it will be fine. i just cleaned my crank up with emery cloth.

what year car is the engine from, if its 87-92 they have forged slugs, if its 93 they are cast hypereutectics. if you have a forged set and in good shape! REUSE THEM! like before, for a street application it will be fine. i got a set of good stock forged pistons for my build and they work great!

Get your crank turned 10/10. Means .010" smaller journals on the mains and rods.
If they look fine (doubt it) just polish them with emry paper and a string.

For sure! Just make sure you have the nessecery supporting mods for nitrous. IE: bigger injectors if it's a dry shot, high volume fuel pump, back off the timing, colder plugs etc.. A window switch is also nice...
I have this one, it's excellent:

I wonder if boring .30 over is really necessary... i could get off cheap by getting the block cleaned and re-ringing the factorey forged slugs...

I got my tax return today, and want to get my motor done with it. It's 2,000.00. What can I get with 2k, and a used block?

The machine shop will need to have the pistons in hand when they bore/hone the bores.
This way they can hit the clearance exactly where you want it...

Do NOT just hone the walls and put over-sized rings on. I did that and guess what? Burns a quart of oil every 300 miles. The ring gaps were within spec too. Seriously don't do it, it was a real bummer knowing all the work I did was pointless. But hey I guess it is giving me the chance to start over and rebuild again in a few weeks!

In reality there are far too many possibilities with $2,000.

What do YOU want to do?

a simple rebuild could do quite well. If you want to get more involved there are stroker kits, then 351w swaps.

It depends on what YOU want.
