I have a 66 fastback with a 289. The car originally had the old emissins but it was taken off and plugged with bolts on one side and looks like just broke off the other side. I'm trying to put on a set of tri-y headers but the bolts are getting in the way. Did any of you guys have emissions and what did you do to put headers on the car?

ok....if the bolts are in there and have the holes plugged....get a die grinder and a cutting wheel and cut them off...then grind them down. THe holes will be plugged still and wont interfere with your header clearance. If you can get the bolt out, you should be able to take it to any mom and pop bolt shop and they will have an allen-headed threaded plug for your heads. Dont trust everything the machine shop says.

Good luck

did you go to an auto parts store or did you go to a specific nut and bolt place? You can also try lowes and home depot.

I am sure people have put headers on a california car before, but they probably had the correct plugs rather than those bolts that you describe. Anyway you can take a pic and post it?

This might do the trick for you.

http://www.boltdepot.com/dimension.aspx?cc=13&cs=88&cm=6

Just pick the correct size and you should be good to go.

Cheers,

Rufus

Check with the Ford parts counter - there is a a plug kit for the emissions ports on the *rear* of late-model 5.0 heads. It might be the correct size - can't hurt to ask.
