I suggest relocating the evap can, as opposed to pitching it.
You know you won't get a code if it is still there and functioning.

Also, the evap can will keep the car from smelling of fuel on hot days, as any fuel vapors that leave the tank will be picked up and held in the evap can.
Some who have removed the evap can claim to not have issues, but I say why take the risk?
You will NOT gain any power from removing this system.
It would be fairly easy to move the can to the outboard of the fenderwell.

Just remove the check engine lamp from the instrument cluster, and voila, no more cel. I agree with vristang, you won't get any improvement from removing the EVAP system.

Carbon canister: It's purpose is to vent the gas tank. The solenoid valve opens at cruse to provide some extra fuel.

It does not weigh but a pound or so and helps richen up the cruse mixture. It draws no HP & keeps the car from smelling like gasoline in a closed garage. So with all these good things and no bad ones, why not hook it up & use it?

You beat me to it. Mine hasn't had a CE light for 4 years now. In MD we did have a real emissions test program and for some reason they just never caught on to it.

In my area of NC they only require the emissions equipment be on the car, they don't test for functionality.

My CE light would be on because I have never been able to get rid of a EGR code. All brand new components and I just didn't/don't feel like tearing into the wiring when everything else is functioning properly. I'm changing out the cam and intake soon and when I'll take it down for the dyno tune I'll have them turn the EGR off. Custom burned chip here I come.

Then I'll be done modding the car, really, honestly, cross my heart and hope to die...

We have a winner! At best (on most modern engines) emissions stuff does not claim any power to be had. At best, it is just extra weight. Take the EGR for instance. I know that the EEC-IV (but some EEC IV vehicles do controll timing) in the fox mustang cannot compensate for spark knock but we'll use this as an example. On another forum that I sometimes visit, I was reading a post that someone had written about deleting the EGR (this is an EEC IV vehicle BTW). Why? The reason why the state of California er I mean the government mandated this is to reduce the NOx emissions. NOx is in direct porportion to heat. What does this have to do with an EGR? Well, it re-inserts "spent" exhaust gasses into the combustion chamber. This non-combustible mixture simply lowers combustion temp! A good thing for high compression guys! I run 11.25:1 on my daily driver. The EGR does NOT opperate at idle or WOT. Only at cruize (IE highway driving). By keeping combustion temps lower you can run MORE timing advance when you hit the go pedal. So you can make MORE power with an EGR.

I'd add to Mike's post that the injectors often dial-back during EGR conditions (further helping economy). And because of the diminished performance, one depresses the gas pedal a little bit further to maintain speed - and in this case, it's a good thing.



I had an EVAP hose leak on each stang and the thing smelled horrid. Being around cars without cats smells horrid. I wonder about some peoples' sniffers (who say neither stinks). I guess it's what we're used to. I personally would and have followed the wise advice of JR, Jason, Mike, et al on this stuff.

It actually took a couple K less than 20K. I guess it means that most of the stupid things I said were overlooked by the kind eyes of moderators.

Regarding the email - you got it Mike. I gotta hear what new mods have hit the ride.
