This sounds crazy, and I had a real hard time beleiving it, but I have verified it with 2 machine shops. The old tale of breaking the motor in for 3000 miles is point less these days. To break the motor in you get on the interstate @ 30 mph run the engine thru the gears quickly, then let the engine run itself back down to 30 mph. Ride a few hundred feet to let the cylinders cool a bit. Do it again. Do this about 10-20 times. After your rings have seated (no smoke running thru exhaust)run a 100 miles or so then change the oil. Your engine is broke in. I have been told the 3000 mile break in is an old-mans rule from back in the day when bearings and other parts had slight .0001 machining differences on them and it helped everything to run together better. I have also been told that on today's vehicles after a rebuild that reman/new parts are in such tight clearances and so accurate that this is already done when the parts are replaced and the bolts are torqued.

How to break in a new engine....

1. Turn key to start motor
2. Let engine warm up to operating temperature
3. Drive to the end of your street.
4. Done

If unsure, repeat steps 1-3 and add "drive it like you stole it" beween 2 and 3. :nice:

I've always notice that the fastest cars that I've seen have always been driven hard, from day one, so don't treat it like a daisy. In reality, it'll take about 8,000km to fully break in your engine, but that's not to say that you shouldn't drive it like you normally would while doing so.

yea the hole thing about 3000 - 5000 mile brake in is crap, all you really have to do is set the rings then drive it the way it is ment to be driven, the way i did with my new motor was let it run for about 10 - 15 minutes at 2500 rpm to set the rings them took a test drive for about 15 min than beat the hell out of it. the way i look at it is if you motor is babied for too long its going to freak when you really get on it. but what the hell do i know im not a mechanic, just what i was told.

I agree with that about no need to drive it for 3000miles like a puzzy. What I did was once I got my 347 driveable was drive it around til it warmed up and then gave it some 1/2 throttle bursts in gear and let the rpm's come down in gear. I also went through a few gears giving it hard 1/2 throttle bursts. I also drove it nomal. I wanted to not only take it high and let the rpm's come down in gear but to also vary my driving. Change your oil right away. My motor has about 60-70 miles on it and i'm on my 3rd oil change. I'm waiting til I hit 500 to throw in synthetic. I asked mark o'neal from probe/chp and he said 500 miles is fine for synthetic since he doesn't believe much in break in's for roller motors.

Break it in any way you want..no one way is absoluetly correct over another. I eased mine over the first 500, with little run from 1500-5500 in second every 50 or so miles..why, because that's how I usually drive. I "break in" all my cars the same...I just drive it the way I drive all the time. I choose not to tach her up from the get go..because I don't feel comfortable driving it like that...again that's not how I drive. Result is the 88's engine perfectly fine..NEVER smoked from day 1 (as it never should),has never used any oil (700 miles no oil loss, and crystal clear)...never was down on power...just runs perfect...like a terrifyed bunny bening chased by a big dog. Oil changes at 100 miles 250 miles, 500 miles, and will again at 1500...with synthetic going in next year (after a tiny rear main leak is fixed come spring...oh well was looking at a tranny rebuild anyway)

I had asked the Nissan dealer where I had bought my 02 Altima if the owners manual had any break in period. They said dont even worry about it, they are broken in from the factory.
BTW- I got the 3.5 se with a 5sp. I beat the living hell out of it.
 - when I took delivery of the LEASED car...
:rlaugh: - after I gave it back.
