68 was the first year for the 302 so im pretty sure they werent in 66's

also the C8AE # is a 68 block

Your VIN contains the A code which was a 289 4V engine. 302's did not come out until 1968. If Ford had a 302 in 66' they certainly would have used it in a 67, but they didn't. The 67' Shelby even retained the 289.

C8 is a 1968 or later casting. That means the block was cast in 68' or later. It would take a pretty hefty time machine to bring back a block from 68' to install it in your 66' built car. Of course it is said that Lee Iococcia was ahead of his time. . . .

What you heard is backwards--in 68' Ford used both 289 and 302 engines, supposedly because of some shortage of 302 parts.

They did start to run out of 289 blocks in 66', but then Ford started pushing the 200 6 banger instead. During that time they created the special million Mustang aniversary promotion which were all 6 cylinders equipped and found in all 3 body styles.

The engine you have is not original, but parts of it might be (but it seems doubtful with the 2V and the wrong block.) The intake manifold and heads also have casting #'s, but you already know that the intake is wrong for your car. Checking all the casting #'s you can find that begin with a "C" should help you to determine what, if any, 66' parts still exist on your engine.

It looks like you have a 68 302 block and as far as 2v verses 4v that is an intake and carb swap. The replacement might have been a 2v or they did it for some other reason.

Actually, I think someone swapped in a whole 68 302 assembly, not caring that it was a 2v instead of a 4v.

These were just used cars at one time, and people did stuff like that.

I think it is pretty safe to say that if you have a 68 engine in your 66, it is not original.
