Cylinder heads from afr, trickflow, or edelbrock. Also get the lower intake ported and matched to the heads while its apart. Alot you could do, are those the only two aftermarket parts you have?

you could run something like a TFS stage 1 with those 1.7s and ride out.

I wouldn't buy a new cam unless it was a custom . . . I just sold my stage 1 for $85 a couple of weeks ago on EBAY fyi.

If your getting the heads cheap, you might want to send them out to Thumper or someone to get them freshened up.Myself,I would keep the stock cam, unless your getting a gear too.I liked the stock cam with 1.7 RR in my car.sometimes I wish I still had it in.

Stock cam with 1.7s should be fun. Are they P heads or reg 3 bar gt40s? P heads can be had for real cheap, gt40s normally are 100-200 more. Performance wise, I think the P heads are better. But both are good. Just many frown upon having to use different headers with the P heads.

Get the GT40 heads stripped down and checked at a "quality" machine shop. Most times a properly done, multi-angle valve job done on a Serdi machine will get you some good gains. If the guides are tired, pick up some replacement one-piece stainless valves and bronze line the guides for an exact fit. I would suggest some PAC Racing 1218 beehive springs with matching retainers and locks and then toss in a small Comp 260 type grind in there. See if Tom Moss has a ported lower available and be sure you have it tuned perfectly. Bet it would run some decent numbers at the track and still look and sound stock!

I'd swap a cam in while you got the heads off. I'm running a e303 and like it, only other one I'd want is a tfs stg1 and not worth the $ to switch IMO.
FYI if it's gt40p's the summit shorty headers clear You will porlly want ot go with angle boot plug wires though.

i have no clue. im getting them from a explorer also. its a bang for my buck considering i dont have much money. im gonna do a 3 angle valve job and possibly shave them. im not too sure about the shaving cuz of the 1.7s.

What year explorer? 3 bars on the end of the head are gt40s, 4 bars are P heads.
96 have gt40 heads, maybe some 97 do, but most 97 and up have the P heads.

Can still have a fun car with stock ported heads till you can save up some $. If your lucky, can usually find them cheap as well. A guy here locally just put some self ported Ps on his car this past year I think, hes running low 12s on them, and had run 12.6 or so on his ported E7s, think he was selling them for 100-150 bucks a few months back.

Just saw you were in FL. Im not for sure, but believe Thumper is in that area. He does alot of port work on E7 heads.
