I am in his same predicament. I went with a 331, over the 347 or 306. I started just wanting a fresh 302-found out it needed to be bored.
wanted to definitely get better hardware, since its the weak point of the smf.
arp rod bolts = $70 , recondition the rods = 230
then I still had to drop more $$ for polish (50.) or cut crank(175.) , bearings (main/rod/cam) and rings.
press off and press on new pistons (50.)
hot tank, balance assembly, align hone and square the block. and rebuild short block
I am into the machine shop for 1200 for labor.

NEW scat/eagle rods w.3/8 arp bolts = 190.
New .30 flat tops I couldn't find a set for under 400.
crank 50 or 175. plus bearings and rings equals roughly 800/900 bucks
I bought the 331 kit for 1050.
no brainer here 25 extra cubes for 100. bucks - priceless!

no, i dont have a lot of money to build my dream motor yet like some of us do, so i do what i can with what i got. mine for my 67 should be 375ish flywheel hp with a stock .40 over bottom and a 600cfm carb, an old school f4b intake, comp hydro tappet .512 lift cam and edelbrock 1.90 1.60 e street heads and some supporting mods. seems like most people get a fair cam and some gt40 heads and an intake and say its bad ass but most often puts alot less power down than the thought they had.

From what I've seen It's hard to break 375 ish n/a with a 600 carb and 10:1 c/r out of a 302. You can do more with more compression, a lot more, but it's bye bye pump gas. That's why, like I said earlier I started leaning toward more cubes 20 years ago. On spike tv a year or so back, on their horsepower tv program they did an edelbrock combo on a 347 with edelbrock heads, cam, intake and carb all matched and it dynoed something like 480 hp and 500lbs torque with 10:1 cr on 93 octane gas. In my honest and humble opinion, that's better than boost, but everybody's entitled to their own opinion!

That's probably because the carb is on the small side, and probably also assuming a weak two plane manifold and small heads.

Not that you should put a lot of faith in magazine articles, but I've got a recent MM&FF issue where they made 412hp from a 306 with 10:1 CR, Twisted Wedge 185 CNC heads, an OTS Comp cam and some junk ProComp dual plane manifold. I forget what size the carb was, but it was bigger than 600. Same engine with a GOOD single plane manifold and a custom cam with more lift (the cam they used only had something like .550-.560 I and E, but the heads come assembled with springs that will handle .600), and I'm sure they could have easily seen 430 or better, and this would have been a very streetable engine, too.

sure. twisted wdge heads are waaay better than the edelbrocks, and 412 is totally believable. I have a friend doing that with afr's. I agree with you. my point is you won't see 500ish hp with a 306 and you can easily with a 347 or stroked 351. It's silly to me to spend 3k to 5k for a power adder to make 400hp when you can put that money into the ENGINE and do the same, then later spray it or boost it a little if you need more. oh, and 600 holleys are for people who aren't serious about going fast!

Wait wait waitttttt.... Your saying the car was always in a never ending power slide, but you pulled the wheels off the ground on an unprepped street without warming up the tires even.... Is your name Dominic Toretto?

yeah that is about all i will get from MY SETUP but i just tried to get alot of my bolt on parts this build and when it gets some wear i will change that STOCK bottom end . it was just an intake and carb on the motor to start with. so this will be a nice bump in power then in a few years i will go to level 2 with my build and put a stroker in it. when i do that i will have to get a bigger carb but a 600cfm is all that most 302's need without a stroker kit in them.
Calculate Required CFM Of Carburetor

i just like boost because i have had cars with turbo and it is soooo much fun.

LOL! yeah I know. sorry, I'll clear that up. I had a set of bfg's I would drive around on in town and they were the powerslide tires. Old t/a 295/50/15's

see them in this thread:

http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-forums/830497-back-day.html

And I had a set of m&h's that bit like a pissed off dog. I happened to have them on when the guy on the bike pulled up. They were allready pretty warm from previous stoplight assery.

I know sounds like b.s. but it's the truth. Vin Diesel wishes he was me!

there's no hate here, if you said i almost got a tire off the ground it would have been a little believable. But your not gonna pull the wheels on an unprepped street.

Whatever. Have you seen the street? No, you haven't. The guy on the bike told me I did it. His name is Ed. would you like his phone number? Go bother someone else.

I know man...

I've seen several cars pull wheels on the street. Anyone who says it isn't possible is either

A) Just trying to talk **** and start trouble...

or

B) They are a sheltered over opinionated neophyte who has never spent any time around race cars....

or

C) both....
