exhaust for 02gt.

A friend of mine has a bone stock 02 GT, and he wants to put a cat back on it. I told him I was almost sure we could just weld in two flows and be done with it. I told him with what he saves, and a little more he could get a catted X and be doing much better than just a catback. So was I right with the muffler weld in thought? And what mid-pipes are a good bang for the buck on these cars? Thanks alot.

btw, I searched, and only saw references to the muffler, question, I couldnt find a solid answer.

Depends what sound he wants.. you could weld in flows, then put a mac o/r H pipe on for a muscle car deep tone.. or put an o/r x pipe on for some more power and a nascarish sound..

a lot depends on what sound he wants. yeah you could just weld some flows in there, and a good bang for the buck midpipe is the UPR X. o/r for $160, and catted x for $300. im sure that would sound pretty good. another popular option is the mac prochamber.

yeah pretty much the same. if he wants a deep muscle car rumble, then chambered muffs with and o/r H is a popular choice. if he wants cats it will still sound good. MRT makes a really good stainless steel H-pipe with or without cats, and as i said before the prochamber is popular too.

an x-pipe usually goes best with bullett type mufflers or resonators such as SLP Loudmouth, Magnaflow Magnapacks, and Borla Stingers. The sound is usually louder and raspier. like sgarlic said, it gives you more of a nascar sound. they sound good with muffs too

the popular brands are magnaflow, mac, upr, flowmaster, slp, bassani, borla and a few others. the most popular weld-ins are flows of course

Depends on how far he wants to get involed with the car.

If he's planning very minor stuff, then i'd weld in the mufflers and be done with it

If he wants to add a TB and plenum, maybe some pulleys, and do some long tubes and headers, then i would go for a ful 2.5" cat-back exhaust.

not tryin to hijack the thread, but would it be any good to get a shop to replace the stock catback with 3" pipes and 3 1/2" tips?.. or should i just get a catback?.. i was wondering if the 3" would be any better than a flowmaster catback in sound and performance/airflow?

You probably would lose so much backpressure if you put 3" pipes on that the car would feel like it has no torque.

It would be a hollower/deeper sound with 3" pipes.

Well that's no good :notnice: I guess i'll just stick with the factory pipes for now.. what size are the stock pipes anyways?

If money is there, get the catback. Get the catted pipe if he is worried about emissions. Otherwise go offroad with it:nice: (not literally, talking about the piping):D

Go with a 2.5in tubed catback. 3inch isn't needed unless you got some pretty stout power...a 306/ported pi's/cams/blown would benefit from it I'm sure. But not an n/a 2v gt IMO.

I just got done putting an o/r xpipe with magnaflow mufflers...all 2.5" pipe from manifolds back with 3" tips. Sounds excellet. Lost some low end torque, but i gained much more past 3grand on the tach. The shop welded on some heat shields off of old cat's to fool the mirror test. I paid $100 for the x pipe off of ebay, and $200 for the mufflers and piping (plus the shop had to correct the flares on the x-pipe). $300 for a header back exhaust. My GT is still bone stock under the hood (for now ;) ). I highly recommend the set up! If your friend is really worried about emissions, the 03-04 cobra's run 2.5" high flow cat's, if he can find some cheap (i am still looking), he can have the shop chop those into place. Good luck!

A 306 SB ford with PI heads and "camS"? :rlaugh: Just had to say something lol.

Anyways he should just get the catback...a flowmaster catback sounds MUCH MUCH better than just weldins. I have personally hear both....and there is no comparison. BTW I just talked to a stang owner (04 I think) who welded in flows and HATED it. He said they were too quiet (they were quiet)...he actually pulled me over to see what type of exhaust i had lol.

I have DR Gas O/R X W/ a magnaflow catback.

I would have him do the midepipe first. can pick up some good power and sound right there. stock midepipe really restricts the sound.

Just have him go to mustangexhaust.com and listen.

I like borla and bassani the best but that is me.

everyone has different tastes.

sorry to dig up an old thread, but I got to talkin with him today, and we established that he would get a catted X, we would weld in mufflers, and he's gonna get a shifter.

Now let me just double check, the catted X (whichver we get), will bolt in place of the factory H, and then we need 2.5" mufflers to weld in place of the stock muffs? Does anyone know offhand if its the stock pipes are 2.5" ID or OD?

And Im trying to get him to go with something other than flows so its not like 99.5% of stangs out there. Hooker Max flows and Dynomax ultraflows are both quite tame lower down and then scream right? He wants a mean exhaust, but not something as loud and attention getting as mine (shorties, o/r H, mac flowpath)

Thanks.
