Jackson, Ms
getting exhaust for my mustang and was wondering what if any advantages there were to getting a cat-back system instead of just putting aftermarket mufflers. any sound difference? hp difference? and im looking for some kind of exhaust thats not like flowmaster or magnaflow (sorry i just dont like them) every redneck around here has flowmasters and i just wanna sound different.

thanks in advance. Spike

Pipe down NewBee. Every redneck DOES have flowmasters. That doesn't make you a redneck, but it DOES make you conformist. Some people want to be different, and that doesn't make you a lesser person.

As to answering the mans question, there are no big advantages to going with a full catback on a N/A car. You may pick up a couple hp, but its not likely. I'm making 298 rwhp N/A through factory mufflers and tailpipes, which shows (in my opinion) that the factory stuff just isn't much of a restriction. Make your choice based on sound and save the money by only getting the mufflers.

I never said I wasn't conformist. I could be Joe Everyman, but that doesn't change the fact that you've got a problem with the fact that someone doesn't like your exhaust. Who cares? Does it really matter?

Frankly, I don't think I could get through the day without a heart attack if I got pissy everytime I found out someone didn't like something I said, did, or owned.

Any mufflers, welded in, are probably good for 3-6 RHWP. A full catback is likely worth 5-10 RWHP. These are simply guestimates, no real hard data to back them up, but this is probably pretty accurate. The full catback will net a bit of a deeper sound due to slightly larger tubing and lack of kinks in the tubing.

Now there is a smart response!

Another thing to cosider:

1 - Welded in mufflers: $150 + $80 labor = about $230 depending on choice of mufflers and labor rates.
2 - Full Catback: $300 - $400 and it's a pretty simple "do it yourself" job.

You pay a little more for the catback, but you get a cleaner job, all stainless (if you buy one that way), a better sound, and no welds that can leak later.

while im asking about exhaust, does the ford racing exhaust for the 99+ gts make any power or sound any different??? just think itd be cool to keep as much ford racing stuff on there as possible
It'd be cool if the FRPP was a worthy setup, but the aftermarket is just filled with quality setups. FRPP makes a SS side exhaust catback kit for the Gen 2 SN95, but the MSRP is (gulp) $950.00! That deserves the flag--> :bs:

I think you might be a bit high on your estimates probably closer to half that on just the catback more or less depending on type. You make more power the closer to the engine you get but things also get more expensive Catback < O/R MidPipe < LongTubes.

Your estimate is much closer. A Dynomax 2.5" cat-back with Ultraflows dyno tested +4.2 rwhp. This test used to be posted on seanhylandmotorsports.com.

Also, this objective article presents pros-and-cons and E.T. changes for several cat-back systems for an LX 5.0.
