Exhaust Leak

I noticed lately my exhaust sounds like there was a leak, so i found that where the header meets the h-pipe on the driver side, there is a bolt missing.

what is the best way to go about doing this myself. money is tight right now so don't really have the money to throw for someone to do it for me.

Like what bolts and washers and whatever else stuff do i need?

I just changed my headers over to BBK and the stock ones used a 5/8 socket to get it out. I did not have any washers as the nut had a built in washer in it.

It's not that hard to replace. it's easier if you can put the car on ramps and just make sure you have a couple extensions with you.

I would imagine a 5/8 outer with course thread inner would work. I would throw a locking washer on there to help keep it from backing out. AND MAKE Sure the car is COLD. You will have to reach your hand up there and it's a bit hot to me messing around up there if the car is the least bit warm.

Should be able to take care if it within 20-30 min without much trouble.

Go to the parts store and buy a new gasket, and buy a new bolt.
Maybe, buy a full set of bolts...

Install the above parts, and all will be right in the world...

I could be wrong but I was not aware there was a gasket between the collector and the H-pipe

I'm kind of confused by the whole sizes your saying.

So first of all, is there a gasket i need that goes between the header and the h-pipe?

Also im guessing its just a bolt and a nut or what?

also what sizes do i need to buy?

no gaskets there only where the header meets the heads. The header to h-pipe is just a ball and socket type flange. The chevys use a donut type gasket that blows out often. ford was smart and didn't use that kind of setup. all tou need to do is replace the stud and tighten it back up.....or replace all of them and buy a stud kit from any parts store....you need 6 so that might be 2 kits as appose to 1 kit just depends on where you buy it from if you jet 3 or 6 with a kit

you could just use a nut and bolt I guess but there is suppose to be stud that thread into the flange like the ones in the link.

my bad they are only a 2 stud flange not a 3 stud....I was probly thinking af a chevy flange since we repair them so damn often lol. so right now you only have 1 stud in the header that leaks.

look at the pic. You need the studs that come with this kit....they thread into the header and then the h pipe flange goes on then the nut that comes with this kit....once you see the pic you should understand.

1 stud is missing , driver side header, i'm looking down from top of engine, i see the bottom of like either bolts or studs and then i see the other hole where the stud should be is just empty. no stud/bolt is in there?

it also doesnt really look like the stud/bolt would thread into anything. it looks as if there is a flange with a hole on each side (header and the h-pipe) and the holes match up and their should be a nut and a bolt.

I'm not really sure thats why i'm asking. i only know what i see but i can't see that great in there.

When i go buy the studs at the local hardware store, what size do i need and such?

maby someone has drilled the hole out and replaced it with a bolt..or they threaded a bolt down through the hole...maby try and take that out and see what has beed done.

if you go to a NAPA or something like that just ask for a header to h-pipe stud kit....or see if they sell them each. you could just do what has already been done (by the sound of it) and replace the bolt that someone has put in there....and it seems as if yours rusted and broke

I'll just call the place who installed my h-pipe first tommorow morning and ask them to take a look at it. they installed it so it was their fault i guess.

yea how long ago did they do it....maby you could just say one fell out or something and they might just do it kinda as a warrenty thing....but iether way it will be a quick easy fix so it shouldn't cost much.

jACKED UP THE Car,

use bolt,washer, lock washer and then nut.

seems to be great.
