Exhaust Question

If your car is under warranty only put the mufflers on. If you put bigger pipes on ford will not fix your transmission if it were to go bad. I have the same mufflers welded in on a stock system on a 03 gt the sound is awesome! You may loose some low end torque and gain on the top end and gain a few horses but the sound is worth it!

what does an aftermarket exhaust have to do with your transmission? from what i've learned, any aftermarket parts you add only void the part you're replacing. so in order to void the warranty on your tranny, you'd have to install an aftermarket clutch or something..

bigger pipes = more horsepower and ford sends a field engineer out to inspect car if tranny breaks especially if you have mods on the car. I have had service managers tell me people put huge exhuast on ford trucks and ford wont fix peoples trasmissions because it was not designed to handle additional horsepower gains. Also I think I paid $80 to have the mufflers welded in. just do the mufflers and keep your warrenty.

check with your dealer . not all dealers are anal about aftermarket parts and warranties , my dealer here in roanoke va , has suggested that i get more things for my car and i have an extended 5 yr 75k mile warranty , they stand behind me , my car , and ford to the fullest and they arent scared of HP gains in the least , they love my new BBK long tubes and wish ford would come out with more aftermarket stuff for their parts guys to sell

This reminds me of something that happened to a friend of mine in high school. I went with this guy up to the track and he had a 1997 Camaro SS under warrenty at the time. The only real mods he did to the car was a borla cat back system (which made it sound badass) and a K&N Filter. Anyhow after taking his car to the track (and much abuse before off of the track) on the way home from the track he had burnt up his clutch and the car was stuck on the side of the highway. After we got his car towed to the dealership he tried to claim that it was normal wear and tear on the car and tried to get it fixed under warrenty. He actally seemed to be pulling the whole thing off too until one of the mechanics brought it to the shops attention that they had found his racing slips in the car. Needless to say after that they were no longer willing to talk to him about any warrenty work.

I thought a clutch was a "normal wear and tear" item like brakes that wouldn't be under warranty anyway? Could be different for Ford though. Just be straight with the guy at the dealer, ask him if they would have a problem with exhaust and warranty work.

hey im actually in the same situation, I wanted to get an American Thunder catback but I'm really low on cash and this car is a daily driver/not raced so i've been considering just the mufflers. I hadn't even thought about the warranty, but there's another issue! As far as sound goes is there any difference between the catback and just the mufflers? I know that mufflers are for sound, don't know if the aftermarket tailpipes affect it much or not. But if it's not a huge difference sound-wise i think i'll just go with mufflers too.

It's actually considered illegal to void a warranty based upon aftermarket parts (for some info, see: Magnuson-Moss Act). They can void the warranty on the missing/altered part, but unless they get an FTC exemption, they're legally liable to fix anything else that goes wrong within reason (naturally, running NOS through your car can void your engine/tranny/rearend warranty).

A lot of dealers were voiding entire warranties for K&N Air Filters (yeah, an air filter).

Granted, it does vary level-wise on what protection you have state to state. But most dealerships will try everything possible to weasel out of a warranty. They hope that most consumers don't do their homework and just accept it. Because in the long run that's $$$ in their pocket when you pay for service. It's best to consult with your attorney when dealing with such things, as they'll be able to tell you if you really did void the engine/tranny warranty based off of aftermarket exhaust pipes.

So if the pipes you want are street-legal general replacement parts (to get better gas mileage) and not full-blown race pipes. You maybe ok with the rest of your warranty. But do talk with your deal to see how anal they are about it.

thats what i was thinking too...i remembered reading about the magnuson-moss act but i just forgot what it was called. thanks :)

I have a a 2003 gt with flowmasters 40 series welded on to the factory system. They sound great! I paid $60 for each muffler and $80 for a guy to weld them on. Try that first. I think you will be happy with the results.
