Explorer intake Q's

What year did the explorers come with the intake that people put on their mustangs, is their a difference in the years? Also how well do these really flow. I've seen some charts showing them flow right up with the cobra's and GT-40's, how similar are they? I might beable to get my hands on one, would a ported one be good enough to hang onto instead of change for a different aftermarket one?

Oh yeah. Did any other ford 5.0 trucks come with this intake or just the explorer. Thanks for the info.

From what I know just the Explorers had this type of intake. The other light trucks had a real "truck" intake.

The lower half of the explorer is a GT-40 and is the same as on a Cobra. The upper half doesn't flow QUITE as well, but I don't know from what I've read that you'd notice the difference, esp. if you do a little port matching. The early ones had theinternal EGR port if you need it. The later ones had external EGR like the 94-95 Mustangs.

Had a full comparative flow printout, but can't find the link right now. Anyway, the flow was more even across the cylinders in the explorer than the other Ford intakes, but the velocity was a little less than like hte Cobra or GT40 and the overall flow within a couple of percent.
Very good low and mid range torque intake with decent upper mid range, certainly on a used basis one of the best bang for the buck intakes. The Edelbrock Performer outflowed it but not by a really significant margin, maybe 10+ %, just for comparison.

AFM did a dyno test of the GT40, Cobra and Explorer on the same dyno mule in 2002 and they all made within a couple of HP across the entire rpm band.

That sounds pretty good. What is the differencs between the internal and external EGR. In fact, what is the EGR. The only thing I know of is the EGR spacer, is that the same?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculator is mounted on the EGR spacer and is part of your emissions system. If you have to stay emissions, you need a Cobra or a 96-early97 Explorer intake that has the internal EGR passages as the late97+ Explorers have external EGR systems.
