MY MUSTANG ENGINE JUST GAVE OUT AND I PLAN ON INSTALLING A EXPLORER ENGINE INTO IT, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT WILL I NEED TO MAKE IT WORK AS FAR AS WHAT PARTS WILL I NEED TO RE-USE, WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST YEAR OF ENGINE TO USE. I ALSO WANT TO PUT A CAM BUT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WICH ONE WILL GIVE ME THE BEST PERFORMANCE (HORSEPOWER)

A friend just finished a similar install. He got his motor out of, I believe, a 1998 Explorer. The things he had to change or reuse were his oil pan, valve covers and distributor. These engines have a coil on plug system and also a distributor less system using a crank trigger. All you have to do is pull that system off and use the stuff from the 5.0 you are pulling. He used the intake off of the explorer instead of his factory it shows to flow better that the stock one. You will have to put a cam in because the factory one in the explorer is very mild. We did an E303 it’s got a good lope and is doesn’t effect drivability to bad. I have a Trick Flow Stage 1 cam in my car and it’s a little more erratic than the E303 but it’s not too bad.

dont forget that you will need to swap over the timing cover from your old motor. the exporer has the 94+ style cover. I re-used the explorer valve covers. you will also need to modify the explorer TB if you are going to use it. it is a 65mm TB, but the linkage is set up different. it's an easy fix for a decent upgrade. you will also need to upgrade the valve springs on the heads as they are designed for the low lift truck cam and wont even hold up to the stock H.O cam, much less a performance cam.

there has been many posts on this and I believe there is a sticky about it. corral also has quite a bit of tech on the explorer swap.

I used the TFS stage 1 cam and its very drivable, infact I drive it everyday; it's a great match for the GT40(P) heads. I recommend the Trick Flow spring kit for upgrading the valve springs.

I prefer the tfs cam,and I know I am leaving hp on the table with that, but it's all about what you plan on doing with the car. every cam has it's place so pick the one you use carefully, not just for the sound it will make.
