Does anyone have a suggestion to quiet it down? I have Bassani headers & catted x-pipe with the stock saleen catback.I don't even remember them testing for noise last time. The standard is 93 and I was at 97/98.

Get some crappy 1 5/8" mufflers from advance auto for $30 and fab up some crappy clamp and pipe setup so you can pass. Then go home, and take it off.

...Or move to FL.
No testing here!
After my turbo I have a 3" pipe that runs to the back and Y's into 2 tail pipes.
No cats, No mufflers.

This is what I am thinking about trying. It passed with the stock saleen catback before. I think the lady was just suspicious because she called another guy over to check it out before doing the test. I think she went the extra mile to get me to fail. It doesn't even say anything about a noise test as part of the inspection on 96 and newer cars.

That sucks. Do they have private stations there? If so, I'd go that route...

No they are all run by the state. I think I may have upset her when I was asking her about the test and raised some suspicion.I only have a base tune and can't go over 3k rpms so I am a little nervous about someone in the drivers seat. The new cobra R hood with pins may have made her suspicious as well.Although they didn't look for cats or pop the hood.

here they have to check all that stuff but they usually dont. as long as your check engine light isnt on and you can pass a basic safty test you should be ok

my dad owns a mechanic shop and if you were in texas in my area i would run it over there for you but you are a long ways away.

when you go to the same person like 30 times a year they work with you on stupid stuff

Luckily here in southern illinois we dont have any testing. My vehicles would never pass noise since all 3 v8s ive owned havent had mufflers and ive never had problems from police either, they like it

I love living the hills of West virginia. No one cares. I wrote a little song about it.

Sing lyrics as to John Denver's "Country boy!"

Verse1:
Got me some headers and I Got me a Callback,

Got a or mid pipe and a nasty Ole v8.

All my friennnds think it soundssss greaaaaaat!!

Thank god I'm country boy!

Working on the rest lol.

Noise regulations have always been a law concerning vehicles. The question is if the particular state enforces the law.

Here in MA, if your car is too loud you fail period...doesn't matter if it's an emmissions legal catted, chambered exhaust. I go to a station that i know and they overlook the noise issue for me.

If i were to go to an unknown station, the first question I would ask is if the loudness would be an issue. If it would, i don't even have the car inspected, i just go to another station.

saleen556:

I don't know what the Saleen tailpipe tips look like but Bassani has inserts that slide inside 3.5" tips. The inside diameter is 2.5" so they do not restrict flow. The inserts are really mini-straight through mufflers. They are held in place by a small bolt that goes through the bottom of the tip. The fiberglass cloth that is wrapped around the perforated core (and you can always add more) will tone down the car a few dB, enough to let you pass. Cost is about $75 (that's what I paid a few years ago).

HTH,

Chris

Thanks Chris for the info. I am actually thinking of getting the bassani catback just to complete the exhaust. The saleen catback I believe is magnaflow but I am not positive and I will take a closer look to see if there is an insert. The shop has a way to tone it down if I don't pass at another station so it shouldn't be a problem.
