OK, I have a 96gt all stock except for exhaust. It was getting hot (past the 'l' in 'normal') so I flushed the coolant and replaced the thermostat. While purging the air I noticed that the fan doesn't kick on until the needle is almost to the 'a' in 'normal'. What might cause that and what do I need to replace?

Check fuses, check low speed fans

check all of your fuses. Esp the fuses in the smaller engine compartment fuse box.

Does the high speed fan turn on when the AC is turned on?

What happens if the coolant sensor is disconnected?

Test BOTH speeds of the fans. I really suspect that the LOW speed fan is not working. The most likley cause is either a blown low speed fan fuse, bad fan, bad CCRM, or the incorrect fan has been used (single speed fan). Split the fan connector. Apply -12 volts to the black wire. Apply +12 volts one a at a time to the other two wires. Confirm that both the low speed AND high speed fan works.

The fan should come on when the car gets to operating temps. If it is not coming on within a few minutes of start it could be the low speed relay. If the relay is bad it is located in the CCRM and would need to replace the whole unit. It really isn't serviceable unless you know your way around a circuit board and solder. Test the fan as stated above to rule it out. Check the fuses in the fuse box under the hood to make sure they are OK.
