Fan testing?

My car is starting to get a little too hot, around 230 F. I have a Fluidyne, 2 bottles of water wetter, 180 stat, NO underdrive pullies, & had the tuner lower the fan temps. I know it's hot in the desert but isn't 230 240 too hot? I'm thinking perhaps my fan isn't pulling the air it should. Is there any way I can test the voltage or Ohms of the fan to see if it is functioning properly? Thanks. :)

You could probably test it to see if its getting the full 12v to the fan. I'm sure you've checked, but is the radiator full? What about the t-stat.. is it sticking closed or is it the fail safe kind that sticks open if it fails?

The rad is full and the temp will hang around 180 for a time before it starts to climb-so I think it's working. The stat and waterpump were new last summer and only have around 2500 miles on them. I even took the u/d pullies off to see if that made a diff, but not much.

What does your radiator look like? Are any of the fins bent/broken. If they are, bend them back straight.

Simple test would be to remove the t-stat and see what happens. I know it will take a while for the car to heat up, but maybe it's sticking (i know it's brand new, doesn't mean it's working).

Are you pinging at all under accleration?

What you’ll want to do is check the locked rotor resistance, the locked rotor current is about 90A, so the resistance is about .16 ohms.

With this low of a resistance, you can’t measure it directly with an ohmmeter. You’ll need a 20 ohm, 20 Watt or similar resistor, you can probably get one from radio shack or other local electrical supply store.

Connect it in series with the fan to the battery, this will regulate the current to about .63A. Measure the voltage on the fan, which should be approximately 100 mV. Rotate the fan through each set of commutators, I believe there are eight or ten sets on that motor, and check each set for the correct voltage.

DId you flush out the system... I can't beleive teh sludge I got out of mine this past week. I was having problems jsut like you are now only with a stock radiator and no water wetter.

When I had the WP off I used the hose to run water through the block until it stopped coming out green... Then I ran jsut a regular water with motor flush and flushed that a couple times...

So far so good but it has only been about 300 miles and the temp has been cooler here...
