i have seen someone say something bad about every clutch at some point, except Spec.....that is the route i will go when the time comes. Perky sells them, IIRC.
good luck.

alright, here goes.

Spec quality is subpar. they have a LOT of chattering issues. Just about EVERY spec out there chatters all the way until the end of the break in period. some, like my bros continue to chatter beyond that and never stop. many shops, brothers included will not stock them due to the excessive chattering issues. (I asked) That having been said, besides the chatter, my bros spec stage 1 grabbed like an on/off switch. I'd stay away from the stage one though, as it is organic. Get a stage 2, or with extreme power, a stage 3.

the king cobra is a great clutch, especially for a fairly stock application. I've heard, though with big power applications, such as yours, they tend to wear very quickly. I've had one in a more or less stock 86 gt for over 5 years now without a problem,...and I never observed any break-in period.

Right now, my personal favorite is the centerforce dual friction. We installed one on my bros 88 notch a month ago. Grabs like nothing else, and the counterweights make the clutch effort even way easier than the spec, in fact, clutch effort is lighter than stock. Centerforce has imo a better name and history than spec does, but that's my opinion.

Lots and lots of people love their specs, so if you go that route, you'll probably be ok. Do consider the centerforce though, it's a fine clutch.

I vote for the Centerforce also. I've had the King Cobra and killed it pretty quickly. It wasn't much different than stock. Never tried a SPEC, but love my centerforce. Grabs like crazy, and is easily tolerable in traffic. You won't have to walk around with that lopsided leg look! :spot:

spec stage 2

haven't had a pinch of problems with my spec stage 2 with my modded 347.

I had a centerforce on my 306 and I absolutley will never eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeever go centerforce again.
chattered til hell wouldn't have it, I couldn't stand that thing.

I have heard of good things about the king cobra but I think it's not quite suited for your application.

My recommendation is spec stage 2 or 3 depending on how modded you are planning on going.

you can see my sig for the mods I got, but I have no timeslips yet.

good luck

I voted for centerforce...only cuz my first stang still has the clutch i put in when i first got it, and its now on its 3rd or 4th motor. Spec is good too...my bf has a stage 2 in his car. He beats the crap outa it and its still fine.

Also, SPEC makes a hybrid disc, like if you want the holding power of the stage 3 but want less on/off operation, you can get a 2/3 hybrid disc. That is what I run. It has a stage 2 kevlar surface on the flywheel side, and the stage 3 pucks on the pressure plate side. Very cool. Grabs like mad.
Oh, and it uses a stage 3 pressure plate. This is the clutch SPEC made to go with the GForce T-5's.
GForce stated that the stage 3 has too rough of an initial bite.
Another reason I run the hybrid.
So I vote SPEC.

I think it boils down to 2 things: $'s and intended use. If money is no issue then I'd get the spec. I'm kind of thrifty myself and would get the King Cobra. Since I only race my car at the track, and not that often anymore, I'd buy the cheapie because it would last me a long time in a hardly used strip car. If you drive all the time you might need a better quality clutch. It's almost always about the $'s........

I wouldn't touch a Spec stage 1 with a 10ft pole - I think there are many people having problems with these clutches. I sent mine back to Spec and they replaced it with a stage 2 - and so far so good - about 200 miles on it - slight chatter when starting in first gear, silky smooth on all other gear changes, and is getting better almost every time I drive it. The stage 1 chattered to the point where I almost didn't want to drive the damn car and stank of clutch burning every time I drove it. Sent it back to Spec, but they wouldn't give me a straight answer on what was wrong with it. They did however replace it with a stage 2 (including pressure plate) without any haggling over why it was giving problems - however I spent $50 to ship the clutch and flywheel, which I had also bought, back to them - they also resurfaced the flywheel at no charge - so thumbs up for Spec - they stand behind their product - even if some of it is crappy. It was my first install so maybe I *****ed it up, but I don't think so - I have heard too many others with the same problems with a stage 1.

Just my 0.0000002 cents.

Did you give it a proper break in period as well as resurface the flywheel? Did you have your clutch cable adjusted properly? A properly adjusted cable along with a proper break in period is very criticle, otherwise your wasting 350+ dollars.

Anyways my vote goes to the Centerforce D/F and right under that is the king cobra. Both are smooth as silk. The D/F grabs really good. You can't pay me to put another spec in my car. Maybe someday i'll try a spec stage 2, but not for awhile.
