Fiberglass Hood Options....

Looking to get a new hood for my 65 fastback (black). Anyhow, looking for something unique so I have narrowed it down to the Mustang Depot E2 low rise hood or the 67 Shelby style hood. Has anyone had any experience with either of these or have any pictures of how they turned out? Do they make either of these with a steel frame?

Pictures, advice, and/or opinions would be much appreciated.

Are you doing anything else to the exterior of the car?

If it's just going to be mild, like just the hood and some rims, I would go with the '67 Shelby style.

I personally don't like the Eleanor hood.

Personally, I've always been a fan of the '67 Shelby hood with the dual scoops. I would go with that.

I do like the appearance of the '67 style hood but be aware that having an open pathway to your engine will bring lots more time redetailing the engine.

Not a big problem.

Here is photo of mine before finishing. Man, why can't the fabrictors make all new parts the same color?

The bend in the 67 hood is greater then the bend at the top of teh fenders. IN short, the hood sits higher in the middle at the sides. I don't know how to fix this though. You can't see it too good in the picture.

hoods

I bought the E2 hood for my 65 fastback. I wanted something different and needed room for the Webers. While I wouldn't call the E2 hood my favorite it's not as bad as the Elenor hood for 67. I have also learned the hard way that an open hood is not worth the limited benefit. The fit and finish was the best I have worked with although not nearly as good as steel. I don't know if they make the hood with a steel fram but call Jay at MD as he works closely with the manufacturer. There are a few pictures on Mustang Depot's OK Corral section.

I agree as I have the same issue... not too bad though (probably a good 1/8 to almost a 1/4 of an inch rise in the center as it is related to the fenders).

prefer the 67 style, have to clean up the engine area some more, but what else do you have to do?

That looks like you left the springs on your hinges!

Also, where did you get it?

No springs on hinges. Just the hinges themselves held in the up position with a wiffle ball bat when needed

Put a soft towel on the hood and some weight and it will slowly conform to the desired height. Once there, take some foam weatherstrip and put it on the bottom of the hood, 1/2"x1/2" will work. Then get some woven fiberglass cloth is strips about 3"-4" wide and glass over the weatherstrip. Don't press down or try to saturate the weatherstrip, it's just a light weight form for the fiberglass. Once cured, it should hold it's shape.

The only hood I know of that has a steel frame is the '65-'66 Shelby hood that is offered by Branda I think.

It'd take a lot of work, but you could probably cut the skin off your old hood and with a lot of sanding, bond the fiberglass skin to your old steel frame.

If it came maroon like that, it's the same manufacturer that Branda uses...

I got a hood from Unlimited Products. First I found that the top skin and the underside frame were not aligned when bonded together. This meant when I got the hood on it was 1/2" off to one side. I called the company for help but that wouldn't call me back. So I drilled out the metal inserts and relocated them. Worked perfect but then when I finally got the hood closed the back edge aross the cowl area was 1/2 low on either side and 3/4 high in the middle. I called the company many times and told them that I wasn't trying to get any money back or a new hood I just wanted tech help on how I could fix it. No one would call me. I finaly found out the owners name and I managed to get them on the phone and they just told me that I had had the hood for more that 30 days and they couldn't help me. So now I still looking for ways to fix it. I was thinking of skinning a stock hood and using the frame.

Unlimited Products is different from MU of course. MU does use FSI as well but it's the gray gel coat, not the maroon...

The oil isnt from the stang, either.
