Fiberglass Hoods vs. Metal Hoods

My car is supposed to go in the body shop in February...my body man wants me to buy a 2" Goodmark metal hood instead of the 2.5" Cervini fiberglass hood I intended to buy. What are the differences between the too besides weight?...does the fiberglass fade easier or is it fragile? Thanks for any help.

Fitment on FG hoods can be crappy and not as durrable as metal.

fiberglass hoods usually require more prep work than metal. maybe that is the reason he wants you to use a metal hood.
boats are made from fiberglass so i don't think fiberglass is that fragile because i've seen a lot of boats take a pounding without any problem to the fiberglass.

go with the fiberglass hod because of wight and u cant beat there durablitity.

Do the fiberglass hood have a tendency to let the paint fade? Does anyone have a picture of a metal cowl hood installed (the Goodmark hood looks like it has a indention down the middle of the hood)? Thanks.

My Cervini hood doesn't use hood pins. And it latches PERFECTLY. No auto body man should have any problem fitting one on.

Go with a cervini's, it is a very good brand and there should be no fitment issues.

I would go with a fiber hood,but make sure you get a good brand.

Ours tapers a little and its irratating to have a little more gap on one side,and yes you should REALLY use hood pins.

I run a 3" Kaenen Hood.

I bought the car with it so I have no Idea how good it was out of the box.
Looks pretty nice though, but doesnt fit so great near the firewall... Maybe installer error.

Go with the Fiberglass to get some weight off the front.

But It looks like the Metal hood you mentioned is actually cheaper than most glass hoods.

My ABC Exclusive fiberglass Cobra R fits as well as the stock metal hood did.
I haven't noticed any fading in the paint but it's only been a little over 2 yrs since the hood was painted.
I don't have hood pins and I've never had a problem with the hood working loose.

i say go with fiber glass. just don't get a pin on only hood. i don't like mine that much. pain to check oil.

A lot of people on here have had problems with fiber hoods popping up while going down the road and causing quite a bit of damage. Hence why they recommend the pins. I am torn as I don't like having hood pins showing but want a cobra r hood. tough decision for me. Either way I am sure you will be happy.

Thanks for all the help. I really want the 2.5" Cervinis fiberglass hood...I guess I will go ahead and order it. I was just scared of it fading and making the new paint job look like crap (the car is black and will be garage kept). Also I plan on using the FRPP stainless steel hood pins for saftey. Thanks.

I highly doubt there will be any problems with paint fading. Just reasoning with myself: If the body shop can paint the plastic bumpers / metal body and fiberglass hood all at the same time. All of those parts will see the same amount of sun and fade generally the same. Maybe slight variations based on what parts of the car see more sun. One of the Stangnet body men should beable to confirm or deny.

I have an 18' Fiberglass sailboat that was painted when it came out of the factory in 1982 that looks better than most cars on the road today....

Maybe if you don't take care of the paint, you can have problems but I doubt that would be the case.

Cervinis makes a great product. You shouldn't have much if any fitment problems with it. I was also considering the goodmark but I just dont like the indent that goes down the middle of the hood.

Not an issue with latching. If you hav e a fiberglass hood you should use pins. I'm an Insurance Appraiser & I see these claims several time a year. At high speeds the latch can tear out of the fiberglass. Last thing anyone needs is a hood flying up into the windshield.
