Finaly I Can Do An Engine Swap and I Got Alot Of ?'s

Ive been talking about doing alot of stuff to my car and I can finaly do an engine swap What I was wondering was what all will need to be done? How much every thing will cost? SHould I have the engine built or just by like a Mach 1 or Cobra engine? Finaly will it just be easier just buying a GT or Cobra?

Thanks for your input

How do you know that you can do an engine swap if you don't even know what has to be done?

hey 02yellowstang,

i'll probably be attempting to do this in about 3 or 4 years from now (maybe sooner it just depends on my budget right now) YES its gonna be hard, the only reason I would recommend doing it, is b/c of the "uniqueness" i guess you could call it. For me, this won't be an over night process either. To give you a good example more then likely everything from the radiator to the rear-end.
would it be "easy" to buy a GT/Mach 1/Cobra???? Perhaps. Would it be cheaper? eh, well if you bought a V6 stang for say about $11k then later on down the road drop another $11k under the hood, tranny, and suspension you'd probably have a $22k Cobra/LS1 Killer for half the price. Easy?. . .no! just take the time to do your research if your gonna do something that big.

BTW what engine block are you wanting to use?? see the reason why I didn't guy a GT is b/c i don't really care for the 4.6L (but thats just me)

Sorry everyone but IM no longer doing the swap. A friend of mine is selling his moded 03' Cobra and im buying that instead . To the quiestion about doing a sawap and not knowing what to do. It's not that the wasmoney the problem it's my parents. Im only 16 it was more they wanted to see that I can drive responsibly and i showed them I can. Hell of a jump if you ask me... a 150 rwhp car to a 550-600 rwhp. Only 272 days to go. I dont get it until he orders his new GT 500 in MArch

Thanks for your posts though.

But they will trust you with a modded '03 Cobra?

02yellowstang-

I seriously hope you're joking about planning on being a 17-year old driver of a '03 Cobra! As good and responsible of a driver as you think you are, the statistics don't lie about kids and powerful cars. You stand an excellent chance of becoming a statistic. Let's be realistic here- an exuberant teen with a 600hp car is not going to keep it mellow during everyday driving!

Have you talked to your insurance agent yet? If he doesn't shoot you down entirely, he will likely price the policy so high that you won't be able to afford it.
You can also bet that the police will be all over a teen-driven Cobra that's being driven any faster than a grandma going to church.

If you drive a Cobra now, what will there be to look forward to in the future? Any other Mustang will be a step down in performance. I'd recommend that you hold off for a while on getting a Cobra, and get a V6 that you can mod like everyone else your age. You'll save a bunch of cash, you'll protect your newly-earned license, and you may just save your life!

All excellent points.

Even at 19 with zero points on my license my insurance on my '01 is rediculous, and I can not imagine what an '03 or '04 Cobra would cost.

As for being a responsible driver, the cliched line "lead me not to temptation" comes to mind. You may be able to keep it safe in a ~190hp v6, but if you are running a 500+ HP Cobra (or even 390hp,) I assure you from personal experience, you will find the temptation to drive like an ass extremely hard to resist.

Even if you don't do real stupid stuff, the lack of experience conbined with the huge jump in power can lead to some serious accidents.

One of my friends got a '99 Trans Am for his first car and put it into a tree going around a corner on a rainy day because he spun the tires switching gears and lost control. Another friend had a '98 Cobra and put it hard into a ditch.

I drive no more than 5 over anywhere but the highway, and still the cops around town stare me down like I am a criminal. I've been pulled over twice STRICLY because I have a fast car (once in my GT and once in my Cobra.) In my Cobra I was going 60 in a 55 and the cop pulled me over and said I was "going a little fast back there," and then badgered me to see if I was drinking.

I second the motion to stick with the V6 for a while and don't go straight from a 6 to a supercharged Cobra (Get a GT, it is a lot faster than a v6, yet not as rediculous as the '03/'04 Cobras and has great modding potential to boot. )

I myself went from a v6 to a GT to an '01 Cobra.
