Hey folks,
Working through my first engine build, 331 stroker. I’m at the pushrod measuring/ordering stage and I’m a little confused. I’ve watched some videos and tried to measure for length properly. I’m using Trickflow 1.6 RR’s, SVE 185 aluminum heads and FMS hydraulic roller lifters. I put the rocker on, finger tightened to remove “slop”, then went another 1/2 turn tightened lash adjuster to “firm” with an allen (cam base circle). Spun the engine for two cycles and checked the marks on the valves. I tested using stock pushrods. Is this acceptable?

Firstly, doesn't look like you're using checker springs. That's gonna skew you're reading.

To expand on what Monkeybutt said, since there is no oil pressure in the lifters, (engine off) the valve springs will compress the lifters completely giving you a false reading. Putting on very light weight springs will stop that.

The marks look ok the left one may be a bit close to the top of the motor. That said, I agree with using the checking springs.

I always do this with light checking springs, and an adjustable pushrod tool.

I agree with the checker springs. Also while it's good to have the contact patch centered on the valve it's the thickness of the mark that's really important. This indicates rocker tip travel. You also want to check and see if the roller tip is centered on the valve at half lift.

TF has a pretty decent explanation:

Thanks for all the pointers folks!
I forgot to mention that I also checked using both a solid lifter and hydraulic, with little to no difference in rocker arm position. I wound up going with Trick Flow’s 6.250” chromoly pushrods, which are .003” longer than OEM.
