Firewall clutch adjuster question

If the cable wasnt preloaded, the TOB isnt held against the PP's diaphram fingers. This can allow the TOB to slop around a bit, eating it and the bearing retainer.

I just installed my MM clutch quadrant, firewall adjuster and non-adjustable cable yesterday. The instructions for the adjuster said it should be adjusted so there is a little slack when the clutch pedal is not pressed, so as not to wear out the throwout bearing.

But what Hissin50 said above makes it sound like maybe the TOB should be in contact with the fingers on the pressure plate all the time.

Which is the correct way to have the cable adjusted?

the slack that they're referring to is play in the clutch cable, not slack between the throwout bearing and pressure plate. It's possible to put preload onto the throwout bearing while still having slack on the clutch cable.

Adjust your clutch so that it grabs at least 2 inches or more off the floor, and so that up top, you have a little bounce/sponge in the pedal before disengagement, and you'll be fine.

If your clutch pedal is solid all the way through, with no play up top, you're adjusted way too tight. Read the link in my sig, i've got a full write with more detail then most people ever want to know.

I'm not buying what HISSIN is selling. The TOB is on a shaft that prevents it from "slopping around." The only things that touch it are that shaft, the clutch fork, and the fingers of the pressure plate, which is bolted in place. Without any slack whatsoever, the TOB won't be damaged. As long as your cable is tight enough to keep it from popping off of the quadrant's fingers, you're good.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Just because there isn't any up/down movement of the t/o bearing on the shaft, "slop" can be generalized as forward/backward movement too. I've seen clutch adjustment so loose that that t/o bearing had more than enough room to go forward and back. without that preload that we're talking about, that t/o bearing is gonna scrape on the pp, and even possibly move back and forth some. I do believe we're all on the same page.

the forward/rearward "slop" isn't going to "eat it up, and the bearing retainer." I still don't buy it. I believe he should just adjust the clutch until it's comfortable, and drive it.

I was having a problem with my clutch slipping a good bit after my last round of upgrades. Picked up 100 hp. Any how I thought it was do to the clutch being to weak. As it turns out the speed shop that put the clutch in had tightened up the adjustment at the clutch fork so much that I was able to back it off by almost an inch before the clutch fork was even close to having slop in it. this also explained why my clutch used to grab so high off the floor. Now it starts to grab about 2 inches off the floor. Well with the clutch working properly it was about 1 week till my trans went out. So now the car will be down for a few months till I can save for a tranny. I backed off my clutch cable at the trans till the fork had a little back and forth play in it, and drew it up just enough to take out the slop.
