Took it in to the dealer. After they ordered the parts they noticed the Tri-ax. Gave me hell but did it anyway and threatened to void the entire warranty. I did get a free oil change out of it because the doofs put 32926 for IN mileage and 39326 for OUT mileage so they figured it was overdue. Anyway here is what it says:

Install Sychronizer Kit
AC Kit Trans 2nd and 3rd SPD SYN (Synchro)
AA Wheel Trns DR VN SPRKT
Fluid

SPW Syncros Burred

NOTE: vehicle has short throw shifter which may affect shift quality and trans operation

Alright, now for my impressions.

They put my tri-ax on the lowest setting (I had it on the highest) and it is extremely notchy. All of the shifts are a lot more positive now and I can no longer feel gear clash or gear movement in 3rd gear when I rest my hand on the shifter. The clunk has also become very quiet. There is no more clunk sound but more of a smooth sounding clunk, just without the clunk sound.

Could some one fill me in on what the heck a TSB fix is?
Maybe it could help me as it is hard to shift into 1st and 2nd. And my Tranny is loud......

Is this suttin that is done under warranty?
Thanks!

A TSB is a technical service bulletin. Essentially it is a notice to dealers that if this X occurs, Y is the fix. It is something done under warranty but is not a recall. That means that they are only obligated to fix it IF they can reproduce it or if they just feel like doing it.

It is TSB #04-15-6 Dated July 20, 2004

TR3650 MANUAL TRANSMISSION - JUMPS OUT OF GEAR 2ND AND/OR 3RD - CLASH NOISE AND/OR RASPY FEEL ON GEAR ENGAGEMENT

Action: Install a Synchro Kit. Kit includes 2nd main shaft gear, 1-2 synchronizer assembly, 3rd main shaft gear, 3-4 synchronizer assembly, 1-2, 3-4 shift fork and rail assemblies, blocking rings and an oil fill level sticker. Add new transmission fluid and fill to the revised lower level.

has anyone successfully gotten a fix on an '04 transmission? Mine is horrible when it's cold and still has a noticeable clunk when it's warmed up.

You can probably take it in. Tell them to look up TSB/Recalls. They may see it and give it to you anyway.

Mine is getting the TSB today. I brought my 2002 in for 3 issues.

1. Gear Clash on upshifting to 2nd when cold. - TSB covers this
2. Howling from the tranny when cold. The gears sound like they're dry. The service manager and the tech took a new 04 out on a cold AM and they said it's the same. It gets better when warm. I guess I need to live with this.
3. Slapping sound from rear when the accelerator is goosed especially in 2nd or 3rd. The solution was to re-tourque the trailing arm connections.

I'll post when I get it back later today or tomorow with the results. I 'll put the Tri Ax back on too with an isolator of some sort between the stick and mounting stub.

dont mean to hijack the thread but has anyone tried to get these done?

Thank you on the detailed response. its a great help!
So, what should I say to the service Dept when I call them to try to convince them to do this service for me under warranty?
I want them to do this for me as I can actually HEAR my transmission gears. And whenever I shift into second or 3rd i hear a grinding raspyness type sound at about 2000Rpms everytime. Oh and EVERYTIME i start my car I hear a knock sound coming from the tranny. Even when I start the car right after its been turned off. and I know its the tranny cause when I have my hand on the shifter I feel it Jerk as it makes the sound when the engine turns....

Pardon my ignorance, but is there somewhere we can actually see the TSB's whether it's on Stangnet or somewhere on the web? This one about the hoodscoop rattle has my attention as I have noticed the paint has chipped around the front points of my scoop.

The federal government has a few full-text TSB's on their website, but for the most part, they only have the titles. Alldata has the full-text TSB's, but they charge to look, though like the fed government, titles-only are free.

Just remember the TSB's are not secrete recalls nor are they hidden warranties. They are nothing more than helpful service tips from the factory to service people on some of the more common or challenging repairs. The repair is only free, if your car is still, otherwise, under warranty.

BTW, I think the scoop rattle TSB is for the Mach 1's shaker, though I guess there could be more than one similar sounding title. On the Mach 1, the TSB suggests replacing the rubber "things" under the shaker which snap onto the mounting plate's ball-studs, with a new type to eliminate the rattle.

if your car is still under warranty, then the dealership must fix that defect(paint chip)...

Best thing to do is take a tech along with you to ride and hear it for him/herself. Otherwise, just tell them the problem exactly as you say here. If they don't fix it or say there is "no problem found" then take it to the service manager and tell him you know there is a TSB on it. That's how I got mine fixed. They had it for a week and didn't call me to tell me it was ready. Then after the week they had nothing done to it. They then had it another 1.5 weeks to get the synchro kit, get a special tool from ford, then fix. Make sure you tell them it needs a special tool when you tell them about the TSB. Saves you/them time.

Wrong, they'll call it a rock chip and be done with it. I've already had that happen to me.

does the tsb apply to the 04 gt's with the 3650?

I was told by a ford mechanic that looked it up for me a month or so ago that there was not a TSB for the '04's and that they came with the fix already. There was a note tho that said somthing along the lines of "hard to get into gear when cold, hard to get into reverse" or somthin, and it said that a fix has not been made yet. hope that helps

The '04s did not have the fix, the fix wasn't even released until the '04 was out of production. I'm hoping he was just mistaken and Ford hasn't actually told their mechanics this.
