quick question for everyone...

I bought an 02 gt about a month and a half ago and it is time for my first oil change. The car has 17,000 miles on it ... I called the dealership and they said that they had been using regualr oil in it. Is it a good idea/ok to switch from regular to synthetic oil??? And if so what oil would you recommend???

Thanks in advance for the help.

mobile 1 or redline. they're an insignificant amount more than regular motor oils, but they're a must if you beat on your engine :nice:

go with a motorcraft, or K&N (i choose K&N) for your filter.

do NOT get a fram SG2 filter. they are feaces.

i heard it is not good to run synthetic oil once you have used regular oil. i wanted to convert but i think it is too late (thanks alot previous owner  )

It's never too late for synthetic oil. I ran mine till 18k miles with motorcraft syn. blend 5w-20 w/ motorcraft oil filter. I then switched to Mobil 1 full synthetic w/ Mobil 1 oil filter. Here in about 500 miles, I'll be changing my oil again and this time, I'm going to Amsoil HP synthetic 5w-30 w/ Amsoil oil filter. Not that Amsoil is so much better than Mobil 1 but their oil is all American oil. :flag:

It should be noted that once my car is out of its extended warrany, I'll be going to Synlube which is a pure synthetic that is not petroleum based at all. It's good for 150k miles but it costs like 30-40 bucks a quart.

Mobil 1 0/20

When I changed I noticed that it spun up a little faster and had slightly more oil pressure. I use 15/50 in my 302 powered '65 and love it. Yeah, it costs more, but wear is minimized and you don't have to change oil nearly as often. I use Wix filters due to the smaller filter media on both cars.

Always run Factory Filters when you can, i.e.: Mopar in Dodge, Motorcraft in Ford, AC Delco in GM, blah, blah, blah.

Clean oil is better than any Conventional, Synthetic or any other kind of oil out there.

I have seen, on the dyno, some of the benefits of Syn oils. 30-40 degree lower oil temps and 5-7 HP increases. Not to mention, better protection at start up. I never looked at Syns because of extended change intervals. I don't care about saving money when it comes to the lifeblood of my engine.
I have 700 miles on my '04 GT and she will get 5w-30 Mobil 1 at 5,000 and every 5k for the rest of her life.

I agree with the last two posts. I too noticed with the Mobil 1 0w-20 my car revs a bit easier. I guess its due to increaed lubrication of syntheic oil. I also agree about clean oil is a must have. Frequent changing of the filter is a must for any motor. Remember, its dirt and metal grit that cause increased engine wear and scarring more than anything other factor.
