seriously, I paid $350 for my long block roller 302, there is no reason to spend that kind of money just to retrofit a 289 with a roller cam.

Well this engine work will be down the road a ways, I'm just trying to get ideas. This summer is all about the body work, get it ready for paint until my friend gets back from Afganastan in October (he's a vehicle maintenance guy, so I'll be his apprentice over the winter). Now I just have to teach myself how to do body work! Great info though, thanks for all your help, now to find a body work thread...

Get around the later model 5.0 mustang guys - I've picked up "wore out" stock 302's for free to $100 and gotten good running engines for $3-500 tops - and those runners were the "HO" engines and not just the lower output 5.0 from a crown vic... For the price of the lifters you should be able to source the block, have it cleaned, and bored - you'll still need more work but that gives you an idea.

one idea that nobody has mentioned - get a '94-up 351W roller capable block and build a 393 stroker - the parts cost are about on par for good 331/347 stroker parts, it can make a lot more power and since you're building an engine there isn't a good reason not to... A stroked 351W with good heads can get in the 500 HP range, with lesser heads ~350-400HP and GOBS of torque is available which makes for a really fun street engine that has mild manners.

Quick question about the 351 idea. Has anyone on here done it to a 65? If so, can they post pics? I've been wondering about clearances to the fenders in the engine compartment with the headers, if the motor mounts match up, etc.

If you go that way spend the money on a good set of headers, they make them for the 351w in a 65-66, I would notch the shock towers just for the ease of changing plugs, but its not necessary...it will fit...tight but it will fit.

well ive mentioned a 408w earlyer thats what ive got but with .040 pistons so its a 410w. its going in a 65. your going to have to put a scoop if you go with a high rise intake. and there are long tube headers just for that setup. im expecting to get about 550 hp and about 750 hp with gas.

Even cheaper to go with a real roller block ready to assemble:
