I was thinking of replacing my worn steering box with a new flaming rivers. I have power steering on my '65 mustang; thus I was thinking of getting the FR 42" shaft, 1" sector, 16:1 ratio box. However, I was wondering if there are any modifications to be done in order to install it.

Should be a direct replacement for the unit you have already. I'd check with them though. BTW, flaming river does not have the shiniest reputation.

A number of people will tell you to consider Borgeson

They appear to have a box for your application. Yellowxr7 swears by them, constantly, and they are cheaper.

You also have the rack and pinion option

The Flaming River boxes seem to be pretty good as I haven't heard too many complaints. They are made in Argentina. It just seems strange that they are supposed to be all new boxes and cost $400+, yet they only have a one year warranty.

The Borgeson I haven't heard of many people buying, but all seem to be happy with their quality. They have a three year warranty, and that is part of what you are paying for $370 for.

You might also want to consider having your original box rebuilt. If it's in rebuildable condition, the cost is far less.

Warranty

The short warranty flaming river offers is definitely indicative of thier level of customer service. I had one of thier boxes and thought it was a good product, just a little pricey considering the price of a rebuild or exchange (Borgeson). Furthermore, Borgeson seems to stand behind thier product a little better. I imagine Stangersite does as well.

Since dbfarr mentioned me I thought I should weigh in again on this. I have heard many complaints about the Flaming River gearboxes so I steered clear of them. I tried a couple of different rebuilt boxes that turned out to be crap. So I ordered a Borgeson box and installed it. I have not had any problems with it, it works very well for me. Their price is reasonable and their warranty is excellent.

I bought a flaming river box a few years back and didn't like it at all. It kept developing more and more slop. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the box and sent it back. They returned it to me and said it just needed an adjustment. I re-installed the box with the same results--more and more slop. I would adjust the box properly only for it to get sloppy again. I finally got fed up with it, and bought an original power steering box off of ebay for $60 dollars. I have been very happy, steering-wise, since. I don't know if my "new" original has been rebuilt, but it is tons better than the flaming river box. I guess I have a very expensive, oddly shaped paper weight.

Their customer service is quite possibly the worst in the world. I am fighting with them right now over returning my complete R&P set up. I'll know by Wednesday if they are taking it back or not.

Their rack & pinion set up is the biggest POS out there...bar none.

I am going back to stock.

mine works fine so far. The boox looks clean and the edges of the castings look well made. I didnt; take it apart so I do not know what the inside is like. I did do some research on them and all I could find was complaints from people who had issues getting them to fit. I believe that is more from frustration then from poor quality. Mine bolted right up.
