Flexplate "HELP"

I have a 67 mustang with a C4 that was a 6 cyl but I have converted to a 351W and got a bell housing at a local mustang grave yard. My ? is which tooth on the flex plate to use 164 or 157. The 351W has a 28oz balancer on it. I do know the bell housings are different so any help would help a ton.

How do you tell?

How would I tell which bell housing I have? When I got it the bell was seting on the ground not hooked to a transmission. It doe's have #'s on it but I will have to get them later today if that would help. Thanks Mike

start by measuring the inside diameter of the 2 bellhousings, if they are the same size you'll use the same tooth count flywheel, if the new one is bigger the it uses the 164t and vice-versa.

I don't think I made my self clear. I started with nothing I got a C4 with no bell housing and the 67 was a shell when I started. The bell I have is from a bone yard and was just laying there. The #'s on it are C5OP-7976-A so I am thinking that is a 1965 and so maybe it is the small bell housing and that would be the 157 tooth flywheel.

ok i gotcha, yeah the earlier bell "should" be the 157t fly but there are always oddballs when it comes to ford stuff. i'd still measure it and gauge that against the diameter of parts store flexplate. there should be around 1" or so of total clearance around between the fly and the bell.

I agree a C5 bell is most likely a 157 tooth bell. You'll need the block plate that goes between the engine a trans too. This is also flywheel specific. And there were both sizes in flywheels and flexplates. Plus the small Mustang II C-4 flex (147 tooth)

Thanks a ton ya'll, I have found everything and it goes, for a C4 bellhousing with pat #C5OP-7976-A with an early C4 you need, 24 spline with a 10.5 bolt pattern on the torque converter, 157 tooth on the flex plate and yes you need a 157 tooth block-off plate to match. Thanks alot Mike

Sorry this took so long. I know you probably don't need this any more, but someone else probably will.

Measuring from the top starter mounting hole straight across to opposite Bell housing mounting hole. (center to center) Listed by flexplate tooth count.

157 tooth = 16 7/8"
164 tooth = 17 3/8"
