Flowmasters

Well i have decided that im gonna get some new mufflers and im sure that i want flowmasters. The thing is im not sure which type i should get (super, original, delta flow, 2 chamber, 3 chamber, 1 chamber), but im leaning towards the super 40 series. I know that its all about preferences but i want to hear your opinions. Thanks...

I forgot to add that id like a deep, throaty sound. Something that lets people know im comin, but not too loud. I only have a 289 so id like to make up for the engine noise, possibly fool people into thinking i have something beastly (not that im hating on the 289, i just love the sound of a bigger engine).

My opinion

Hi. I've got a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach One with a 377 Windsor stroker engine with JBA headers with 2.5 inch inside diameter pipe. I had dual 2 chamber 40 series flowmasters(42541) for one year discovering that they were very loud for street use. I think they are more for track and drag strip use. I started getting complaints from my neighbors and also it was deafening to my ears due to high interior resonance and they're sitting around my house. So I replaced the mufflers with delta flow 50 series 3 chamber flowmasters. Now, it is more quieter and more mellow tone with hardly any interior resonance. The loudness comes when I stomp on it. Flowmaster says that their delta-flow 40 series mufflers have the aggressive tone with no interior resonance, supposedly. The super 40's sound good on their sound clips on their website. It probably depends on the size of the engine and if headers are used or not that creates the tone and the decibel level of the muffler.

Catstang has long tubes and 2 1/2 pipes with Orig flowmasters,turndown tail tips.
People think its a BB when it rolls up behind them at a light Idleing.

It can be a little loud at times.

I just changed from 2 chamber to 3 chamber delta.

the flowmasters are really loud du! I had them on my 289 and they were eally pingy high pitch airy sounding..... I changed them out for some mufflers with some packing and they sound waaaay better

So did I.........I love them! I’m really glad I did it too. I got 409 stainless far an awesome price from a guy on e-bay, almost half price. and don't let the exhaust guy tell you it won't fit either....I have pics if you need to convince him...

my whole set up is 351w, headman shortys, h-pipe 2 1/2 " duel 409 stainless 40 series delta flow Flowmasters and dump before the rear

I got rid of my original 2 chambers. They sounded awesome, but they were really loud. I went with the Dynomax super turbos-- they are too quiet and sound wimpy at idle. Wish I just left the flows on...
A friend of mine has 50 deltas on his 69-- they sound really good.

well this is quite odd. i have the 40 series flowmasters. 2 chambers. And i don't really think they are loud at all. maybe the way my exhaust is set up might make it different. But when i'm at idle..parked, it's really a deep sound to it. and it's not loud at all. lol strange :-|

LOL, no no no, i aint that dumb. they are on there correctly. However, I think the car was originally single exhaust and i think the piping is only 2" 1/4". Also, there is no H or X pipe. Do you think that is enough to quiet them down? I have nothing else to really go by, but they aren't LOUD, they are just deep sounding. i'm sure it's loud at 2700 - 3000 RPM

When i originally got the car it had regular turbo mufflers on it and the one had a hole in it, and I think that was louder than or about as loud as it is now. Perhaps i'm just used to my friends 81 Blazer with cutouts. lol

I discovered the exact same thing and changed to the same muffler. The interior resonance of the 40's made me grit my teeth at certain RPM. I would be interested in hearing the new "super 40's", but I would not think that they are more quiet than the 50's.

I have tri-ys with 2.5" pipes, custom x and magnaflows. I had original 40s flows, but everyone around here has them, and my car sounded no different than a 5.0L or chevy pickup with flowmasters. Now I stand out and its AEWSOME! Flows seem to be all about sound, not performance with those baffles everywhere.

I've got the Delta Flow 2 chambers and I love them. They are noticeable when driving normal yet are not too loud. I think they're perfect for a street car.

One word: Spintechs

Flowmasters, to me, have been played out...big time. I cant tell you how many people have them. When one goes by, a person that has been around them a while can very easily pick them out. Get something different, something that will keep people guessing. Remember, flowmaster is notorious for its 'drone' at certain RPMs. Hooker Aerochambers are the highest flowing chambered muffler on the market...or so they claim.

**note: I dont have anything against flowmasters, just kind of tired of them. I had them on my trans am, my 66 coupe, and my 90 gt before I swapped them out.

Sound depends on the motor.

I had a relatively mild 351 in my 69 with some kind of turbo mufflers on there. After I built my 393 with aluminum heads, aggressive cam, etc, I hooked up the same exhaust system and it is twice as loud. Compression and cam profile and displacement make a huge difference in sound.

Anybody who says 40 series flows aren't loud probably has a fairly mild motor.

Good point Max Power. I guess you could say my engine is mild...no real heavy duty mods to it yet, pretty stock '68 302.
And after listening to my car again, it isn't exactly quiet, but like i said, I'm probably just used to my friends Blazer with those Cut Outs, lol after hearing those, my car seems quiet haha

something to keep in mind when i start to overhaul that engine....

Exactly! My 347 is fairly wimpy as far as 347s go, but listen to my dyno mpeg and you can tell this thing with 2 chamber Flowmasters can get real loud at the higher RPMs. Freeway drone was my biggest problem. With the overdrive cruising on the freeway was at around 2000 rpm and the 2 chambers had a funny drone to them. The 3 chamber deltas sound great and no drone

I've got 40s on mine right now with an H. It is loud, blows the hell out of anything I've heard around town with the exception of one truck with straight pipes. But, that's the way I like it I guess, I can still hear it with the stereo on about half volume.

It is very true that they are played out, anybody with any kind of american muscle car that doesn't know much slaps em on because of the reputation. But on a 5.0, I haven't found anything yet that I like better. My cam makes my car sound a lot different than anything else around town so I'll be keeping the 40s for a while.

I want to back up the loudness statements made about engine power making a huge difference. I have glasspacks that you can't even hear at idle on a wimpy stock engine. If I had a 500 h.p. beast, you wouldn't be able to stand it! The glasspacks are definitely noticeable at cruising speeds and sound good when you get on it. Cost was around $35 for both! I hope to have more h.p. soon so I will be changing them.
