how would flowmaster 40s sound on my 91 LX 2.3? i want a deep rumble, but getting that from the I4 probably isnt very easy, anyone know of any mufflers that would give me that american muscle sound?

Flowmasters are alright, but not my favorite.
Dynomax super turbos are super deep.... however I think mine goes kinda ricey if you are right behind it. Nothing a cat couldn't cure.

i dont have cats, how much would a good one go for? and are you sure it would make my exhaust tone real deep?

if you have the stock exhaust, you have 2 cats in there already (catalytic converters ) They tend to make the exhaust more mellow, and the pulses are less aggressive. I have a bit of a unique exhaust, and I think a cat would really help mellow it out. It is pretty aggressive, and very bassy.

Dynomax is definitely a good way to go. I need to ditch my cats and/or get a hiflo replacement....I think they're choking me and reducing sound.

i had gutted cats with a turbo thrush muffler that dumped right after the rearend. i got the muffler from advance for like 20 bucks and it didnt sound to bad. in the car it sounded slightly ricey but standing behind the car it sounded good( what me and my friends thought). it all depends on ur personal preference.

heres what mine sounds like, i have 2.5' downpipe,no cats, svo y pipe, dual flowmaster 40's 2 chamber. sounds ricey cause the vibration of the exhaust its to high for the camera.but that first rev at 12 secs , is a good idea of what it sounds like. enjoy

I just ran a stock 2" pipe with one high flow cat, deleted other cat, and a cheap turbo muffler. This sounds ok but gets kinda ricy sounding at curz speeds.

To me Flows has always been a bit noisy for me, but I wonder on a 2.3L if it would balance out and sound kinda deep the way you want.

As for my exhaust I ran a stock 2" pipe, deleted pre-cat, high flow cat, and a cheap turbo muffler. This sounds good at idle, but gets kinda ricy at curz speeds. This may sound kinda nuts/crazy but my motor sounds a little deeper once I put my CAI on it also

Ricey sounding is what we call a honda with a fart can muffler, that is a short way of saying it I guess

i got 2 inch exhaust, removed the stock second cat (still got cat by manifold), ran that into a 2 1/4 40 series flowmaster with a 2 1/4inch 84 gt tail. car has nice rumble at idle, is a constant drone from about 2000 to 2800 rpm after that it sounds like i got a f***ing fart pipe on the car. no offense to annyone here but i dont think its possible to make a 4 cylinder sound good unless you got the sound of a turbo spooling up to go along with it. i dont have a turbo

maybe i should just keep the stock exhaust but put a chrome tip for looks, cuz there are no long term goals of making this thing fast. so i might as well make people look, right?

i think its time for me to write a letter to MM&FF, maybe they'll give me some suggestions.

My stang had no muffler (obviously) I don't thinkk it sounded like any kind of honda or typical "rice" type car. It was loud as hell, and very raspy, but it jst sounded like an engine to me. Would a 2.3 with a cat and about 4 feet of stock pipe after that sound ricey? I'm just curious, I'm not trying to be argumentitive or anything.

My catback fell off last month and it was bloody loud as all hell, and pretty damn ricey too. Not to mention the car fell on its face with no backpressure...

I put a Flowmaster on it and it made more of a rumbling sound. I like it. It's still pretty loud but I have yet to put the LX 5.0 tailpipe on it that I just got, that will quieten it down somewhat or at least move the noise more to someone other than me

At low rpm it doesn't sound bad at all, but once you start revving it it makes an annoyingly loud noise, nothing nearly like a fartcannon but annoying all the same, so I try to keep my revs under 2k rpm.

The ricer sound is pretty much the sound you make when you go to take your morning piss and let the old foghorn loose. A little bit higher pitched, but essentially similar in that you can hear a distinct popping from the lack of cylinders or flapping sphincter, whichever you're listening to.
