I ran across a car that I thought about buying before last summer. Ends up someone bought it before I did and now they are selling it due to lack of time to work on it.

Heres the deal though... Its a 90 Notchback, 5.0 5 speed. Heres a rundown.

The good: Price, somewhere between 15-1900 bucks. It hauls ass. The body is straight, only one small dent. Its a 5 speed. It looks great, aftermarket wheels a nice cowl hood. Very tight aftermarket suspension. Definatly has at least 3.73's out back, wouldnt suprise me if it had 4.10's or greater... it just outright rips off the line, and will bark 4 gears easy (found that out when I origionally drove it).

The not so good: A/C has been ripped out for power and weight reasons so it doesnt even have air. No radio. Tach doesnt work (aftermarket monster tach does though). The guy had a rebuild tranny installed, says clutch may need adjusting. No clue how many miles are on it. The plastic on the back bumper is busted on one corner, probaly nothing too expensive. Clearcote is chipping in two very small spots.

The ugly: The interior is hell. Door panels have alot of wear, they arent Mustang front seats, part of dash is a little loose, the steering colum cover is missing on the bottom part, allowing the ignition tumbler to float around and fall out if you yank on it, the center console is missing a peice or two, the carpet is *****... Headliner is fine, and the back seats are fine though.

It sounds like a heap, and it kinda is... lol. But I just see so much potential in that thing its silly. I dont know why though. It looks mean as hell, and the engine is solid, and it is very fast. I dont think there is anything done to the engine though. No cam lope or anything, just drop in filter and h-pipe + Flowmasters, and a shortbelt for the lack of AC/Smog equipent. I know the car has probaly been beat on, but the engine doesnt tick/knock/burn oil or anything.

What would you guys do? I know its a hell of a project car, and I also know parts are cheap for these cars. Its not something that needs to be show worthy in a short time, but I would need to be able to drive it every day, and race it at the track every once and a while.

Its just a debate of stripping the interior out, and leaving it bare bones, or restoring it to what it should be... or building the engine. I dont know... But would you guys start out with this, or pay more for one thats in better shape?

If it is really that fast and you think the motor is stock, even 410s wont make it that fast, it will make it feel fast. I would be more likely to purchase a car with an engine issue than purchase one with an interior, possible clutch or transmission, lack of A/C body work. All that stuff can be expensive. A coupe that has been lightened is going to be a LIGHT mustang, it is easy to make a little HP feel like a lot. Think about all the work needed on the car an how much of it will be necessary for you to enjoy driving it, and how much money it will take to put it the way you want it. $1500 seems a tad high given everything you mentioned, $1900 is WAY to high. Now if there has been motor work done, and you can ensure that the transmission has been rebuilt by a reputable person tehn the other things are dealable, but I dont think I would go over $1500. Check teh suspension and find out what , if anything has been done. Check for subframes, lower control arms, welded lower torque boxes. A car with 4.10s should have had most of that done already otherwise you could have things bent or broken if it was able to hook up.

Good luck with your decision.

Dood... 1500-1900 for a NOTCH? Man, GO FOR IT. Put a couple thousand into it and make it looks great and run perfect, and you could turn around and sell it for 7-8000!

I would agree if he knew more about it, but that is a 15 year old car that has probably been dogged hard, if it is set up for it then yeah it could be a good deal, but if it is a lot of stock parts with gears and a bunch of "extra" parts removed he may end up spending more to fix it up than it is worth.

Just be careful and examine the car totally, maybe the guy that bought it before you found to mjuch work was involved.

I am not saying dont buy it, but make sure it is worth it for you.

Wow thanks for the quick responses guys.

Its and ex partol car, and it could be on its 5th motor for all I know. The guy who has it had fixed a few thing (brakes, tranny, saggy doors). Put new fluids and belt on it. He said its his sons car, and he just bought a truck so he's selling it to help pay for it...

Also, on how fast it feels... It feels fast, but I do think that is due to gears... it winds out each gear pretty quick. I have driven a 12 second LX before, and it was alot faster and you felt alot more power but the one im looking at still feels quick... then again im used to driving a 4x4, haha.

Part of me is absoloutly screaming to buy it, keep it on minimal coverage insurance to save some money for it, and not drive it alot with the minimal, work on it and turn it into a beast. And if it gives me hell, just re-sell it. As far as the price, I know 1900 is too high, but I do not think he will go below 1500. That extra 400 bucks will get alot of minor things worked out with it though... Junkyard seats, carpet, trim missing from the center consol, and maybe even door panels if I do my shopping right. But I mean, 1500 bucks really is not alot of money for a car with alot of potential, at least thats what I tell myself.

Another part is softly telling me to hold out for the right Mustang, wether it be a 5.0 or a 4.6... But I just think it is ironic how much I liked the car in the first place, and now I have the chance to get it again. I guess I gotta sleep on it. I mean, I know its been beat on.. but it seems fun in a challenging way to strip it out and partially rebuild it.

it seems like the car needs a lot of work. i would offer him 1200, whats the worst that could happen? he will say no and just come back with a different offer. play hardball with the guy and try to get a awesome deal out of it.

How much was it for sale the last time you looked at it?

You know something...that is all that counts, you might regret it in the long run, but if you check it out thouroughly and it "feels" right then go for it.

Gut feeling is something that is hard to pass up, just mnake sure you get that thing jacked up and check the suspension, torque boxes, etc. You can spend a LOT of money quick if you find something broken after you buy it, then you will have another feeling in your gut...:(

^^^^^ I disagree. 1500-1900 for an original 5.0 Notch is a steal. You're hard pressed to find a ROLLER for that much, minus the engine and tranny!! GO FOR IT!!

I agree with this statement. Go on autotrader and look for a notchback. Everybody is crazy!!! They want more for them cars today (still needing work) than Ford wanted for them when they were new. Thats why I am building the one I got. I will have way less and it will be way nicer. I agree!!!!!!!! with this statement.

i would buy it....you could spend less the $1000 on interior parts...used clean complete set of seats, dash, radio, and radio delete part...someone probably undid the original tach to put in the new tach...i started off with a similar rolling project...only i paid $3000 for my project car...the previous owner put pontiac gto seat in front, had white paint staind all over the back, no center console, carpet was thrashed, i had 2 different set of gauges that didn't work( the pod kind and in my center vent), put ungly 15" tires, broke the bracket to my clutch quad under the dash( it stops the clutch from coming all the way back and the only way to fix it is to get a whole new clutch assembly), the guy thought it would be cool to put felt on the door panels and dash, i had to fix the door locks.... i think that was about it...ohhh yeah my sunroof leaked...:) ....but i just got through putting my car in a local car show...i took 3rd in my class of unfinished exterior....i still have more things i'm doing in the future....as long as you can vision it you can do it....

I am almost done with my car. It runs and drives, and it is all painted, interior is together. I just have to put the front bumper on it, and some of the moldings and trim. The car is close, and I can't wait. I have the car I wanted, for less than I could have bought any other notchback for. It is all stock, unmolested, factory parts. It now has brand new paint inside and out. Now I just need to get some wheels. It is so worth doing it yourself. Every notch I looked for, I picked them apart. Now I am happy.
