Trying to pick your brains on building a aod with 373 gears and heads cam intake. What all does it take to put 4r70w internals into a aod and what rebuild kits would you recommend any info helps just trying to get a game plan thanks.

Get the 4R70W and buy a controller, you won't regret it. I had an AOD in my Falcon and was going down that road. I got a 4R70W from a 94 GT. After pricing parts and considering time for the rebuild I got a controller from Bauman Electric Controls. It was the cheaper route and performs way better than the AOD ever could. Mine will chirp second gear, I've never had an automatic that would do that, and this thing is stock from a wrecking yard.

The 4R70W with small block bolt pattern can be found behind the following 94-2000ish. 300 straight six in trucks and vans, 5.0 in 94,95 mustang and Tbirds, 3.8 v6 anything

Do you know if there is anywhere that's just selling 4r70w gear set so you could swap it in a aod case

You can only use some of the parts from the 4R70W, clutches, drums, and a gear set IIRC. In the end it's still a mechanically programmed trans that has a reputation for being finicky.
You can find all the hard parts from any of the above mentioned donors. The v6 mustangs are almost incapable of damaging a 4R70W.
I was going to do this to my AOD but when I added up the cost rebuild kit, shift kit, and converter the Quick 2 controller was cheaper and way less labor. I think around $600 all in. The customer support was outstanding. It was literally a plug and play install.
If your dead set on the AOD/4R hybrid and want to buy parts Transtar Industries is who I get parts from.

So you decided to just get the 4r70w with that controller is that the way you went with your build.

www.car-parts.com

Bought one late las year for $150 with the converter out of a V6 Mustang in the Dallas area. If you need the VSS and Speedo cable provision you need one out of a 98-02 as they have the mechanical diode and all the good parts. 03 and up do as well but do not have a provision for a mechanical speedo cable.

Is the install pretty straight forward I guess you need the controller for the trans and should be good to go right

That’s pretty much it. Another buddy pulled the trans apart and inspected it. Was good to go so he put it back together and it was a bolt up as far as I know. You will need the USShift or Baughman Engineering controller and I believe it plugs right in. Wiring is straight forward and it self learns. Once it learns then you can go in and adjust shift points and I believe firmness.

Swap has been done a lot so search it out before hand so you fully understand what you are getting into and what parts you will need. Not sure about the trans mount and crossmember. May just need a Stifflers cross member and mount kit.

I had bought the 4R70W for parts to do the AOD upgrade. When I pulled the pan on the AOD it was full of glitter. The 4R70W looked really clean so I went with that.
