Paint and Body Fox Body Painting 101

@Davedacarpainter
I haven't checked on the front bumper cover, it being Mother's Day weekend (and we've had contractors all over our house -master bath remodel), but I thought I'd ask your opinion on my (hopefully) near future plans.

I've almost got my roof squared away (PO used it to store gallon cans of house paint). Right now I have some Duplicolor rattle can primer sealer on those areas. I plan to sand that off and paint the bare metal and repair areas with House of Kolor two-part epoxy primer. That will give me some time to prep the rest of the car for paint.

When I do paint I plan to use PPG base/clear. I've got a set of DevillBiss SportLine full-size and detail guns. I love Eastwood. I have heard some people say to sand the base to make it extra smooth and others warn against it.

What is your opinion of my plans for paint choices and the sanding of the base?

Thanks again, a Dave. You are a super guy

Jim

Don't waste time sanding the base before clear unless you have some big honker dirt nibs in it. You always stand a chance of distorting the color doing this.

If you're wanting to have an extra flat finish, wait till after you have cleared the car, color sand with some 800 (being careful of edges) and spray one or two coats more clear on top of it.

I'll be doing a new thread here shortly on a '63 Impala SS convertible I'll be prepping and painting. Watch what I do there. When I actually get to the paint stage, this is what I will do. You get an incredibly deep smooth shine that way.

I also will be using an epoxy primer on this car. I'll show you how I use it and specifically why I'll use it the way I'm using it. I will also be using a urethane high build primer too.

When spraying the epoxy, I will do it immediately after stripping a panel. Like Monday I'll be starting on the left quarter, before I go home Monday night it will have a coat or two of epoxy on it. CLEANLINESS is the key with a stripped/blasted panel. Where gloves. I'll post my progress sometime Tuesday with what I'm doing.

I'm not sure of your timetable for your car, but I plan to have this car painted in seven weeks. If you have a question before I get to that stage, just ask.

As for your choice in products, House of Kolor is a top of the line product, very good choice.

I can't wait to see your new thread, Dave. I did forget to add that over the expoxy I'll use a high-built urethane primer filler, block sanding, then shooting it with a primer sealer. This is a street car, so I'm not striving for perfection, like I would if was for show.

I did paint a 73 vetted years ago in my garage. The wife told me "never again". I'm hoping she won't notice when I prime the car :)

ok @Davedacarpainter here's a random oddball question:

what should i do if it i somehow manage to get wasp killer on my freshly sanded bondo/primer?

one of those evil bastages just startled the crap out of me when i went to grab some gloves out of the cabinet (so i could sand some more). my trusty (now empty) can of raid was within arms reach and i completely lost track of where i was aiming :( didnt get the thing soaked but it does have a bunch of "spots" on the firewall.

Unless I've missed it somewhere, I don't recall seeing a basic list of what one might need to paint in the garage.

I mean what's are must have in terms of items and quality to get a good turn-out?

Both things mentioned, wax and grease remover for the petroleum based additives and isopropyl alcohol for the more natural crap in the insecticide. To be sure, some warm water with a little dawn in it.

That should do the trick.

Basically, wash the fck out of it and you should be ok.

Good question Noobz, and I will answer that probably in the morning. I just got back from working on the Impala and will update that thread and go to bed.

Hey Dave, found a small amount of rust on the floors of my t-top. Any suggestions for clean up before I dive in?

@Davedacarpainter I about had a meltdown last night. Still working on the truck panels, the underside of the hood in particular, prepping for sealer.
- I used the blow-off tool to blow out all the cracks and crevices really well.
- wiped it all down with thinner
- blew it all off again, for good measure.

AS SOON AS I started spraying sealer, sht starts coming out like confetti and trashes everything. WTF.

What else can I do?
