Let me start off with this: GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Alright, now to my situation.
Im a first timer when it comes to building a motor, but I have been around cars my whole life, so I do alright most of the time. The motor is an ealry 70's 351 cleveland that has been stroked to a 385 with a fairly aggressive cam. The heads are stock 2v, fully port matched with the intake. I am running a full msd setup (6al, 8.8mm wires, blaster 2 coil). I am very confident in all my wiring as I have checked and rechecked it. Also, I know my firing order is correct because I went through that 5 times already. The motor is getting fuel and spark, so here is whats happening.
When I go to start it, I will get I pop, and thats it. Then I just get the cranking noise. Every time I try, I get one pop-like backfire noise and thats it, only 1. On occasion there will be a little fire coming up through the carb, but nuthin serious.

So whats my problem, what did I do wrong?

If there is more info needed before we can determine the problem please let me know and I will try my best to inform.

Thanks sooo much in advance, I really really want to get this thing started!

Are you 100% sure you stabbed the distro when you were at TDC on the compression stroke?

If so my next guess is that you need to dial in more advance. Try rotating it while it is cranking.

I agree, sounds liek your distributor is 180 degrees out. Double check your distributor.

I also agree on the timing. Sounds like you are 180 degrees out.

#1 cyl is on the pass side in front. also your firing order is dictated by the camshaft, if your dist is stabbed correctly; with #1 cyl at top dead center on the compression stroke, the harmonic ballancer should be @ 0 tdc on the timing pointer. the rotor (under the dist cap) should point to the # 1 cyl spark plug wire.
If your # 1 cyl doesnt make compression when the timing mark goes by 0tdc (it will go by twice one should have compression) your timing chain could be on wrong ususlly people set it up to the chevy #1 on the driver side. good luck chris

Would't that be 360 degrees out since it takes 720 degrees of crank rotation to get from tdc on compression back to tdc on compression And 360 degrees of crank rotation to go from tdc at comporession to tdc at exhaust?

180 degrees of cam rotation (which drives the distro) not crank rotation.

Yeah, get the dizzy in right, then (if it is) add advance. If you have a remote starter, then try adding it while cranking.

Gee, I didn't know that the cam drove the distributor. After all the decades, imagine that.
And I always thought we spoke of degrees in crankshat degrees not camshaft degrees. You know...like 12 degrees advance (on a mechanical H-P 289 dual-point)...not 6 degrees advance.

Are you trying to be sarcastic on purpose or are you just dense from birth?

That is not intended as an insult, but after reading your posts in this thread and others over the last few days I really can't tell.

You must be the ONLY one who thinks if it in this way. EVERYBODY else refers to this as being 180* off.
