fuel pump eccentric on 351W questions

Hey guys,
I have an 84' 351w block Im building up for my mustang I just got it back from the machine shop I had asked the machinist about the fuel pump eccentric on the end of the camshaft since its gonna be EFI he said I dont need it but I have heard somewhere that without it staying there the cam bolt will bottom out in the cam before its tight due to the fact that the bolt is a lil bit longer then the FI engine bolt is he right ? can I just leave it off?

EDIT:I have done a search and found I may need to use a longer cam dowel pin but some people have said they used the shorter pin which one do I need?

don't know about the dowl pin, but why don't you just get a bolt from a 5.0 or any newer ford pushrod V8. Mine didn't bottom out.......but that doesn't mean that yours won't.....there are like 8 zillion different cams out there..

I don't think the longer dowel pin would cause any interference issues, so I would go with the longer of the 2. If it hangs out who cares?

I have not heard of the bolt bottoming out before, but I have always used a 5.0 cam bolt.

Yes, 5.0 cam bolts are everywhere. But they can be hard to get to, as you will need to pull the water pump and timing cover just to get that stupid little bolt.

Some measuring of all the involved components should let you know if you are close to having issues. I would want to see ~ .010" of clearance.

If you don't have the tools to measure things out (your engine builder probably should have dones this for you), you could just use a hacksaw to cut 1 thread off the bolt.

What I have suggested may not be the best way to deal with your situation, but it is all I can come up with.
