gas mileage revisited

lol..... hey im one of those guys who thinks to himself as hes waxing the car of how much smoother its gonna cut through the air...

I cant believe the horrible mileage people get with a stock stang and gears on the highway its just weird. I had 3:55's and a lead foot and constantly got over 30mpg on the highway. I also inflated my tires according to the door tag like hissin said.

Did you figure your mileage out by diving by the number of gallons?

I don't understand how it is possible to get over 30 mpg on the highway. What was the average speed? 50mph?

I just drove my car back from Florida a couple months ago and I averaged between 20 and 25mg the whole way. I didn't beat on it and it rolled pretty good with all the changes listed below. And for what its worth, I never run the mfg's recommendation. I no longer have 16's (17's now) and I don't run stock touring radials. My tires take 44psi compared to the OEM 35psi. Now that will cause you to get worse mileage and wear out the outsides of the tires prematurely...

I would start on a completely full tank. Id fill up then set the trip odometer then at the next gas stop i would take the amount of gas it took to fill it divided by the ammount of miles i put on. I went from Orlando to 40 miles into S/c before i filled up. I drove no less the 70 Mph the whole way too.

no, your overinflating them, that rating is the max pressure for that tire, how does that translate into what you should use??? it doesent

how did (example) bridgestone know every single (example) Expedia S-01 sold would go to a mustang with your vehicle weight/suspension so they could brand them all with the correct tire pressure for you?

use your factory rated tire pressure. adjust as nessicary based on tire wear

This was my point before.

You guys are comparing apples and oranges. None of our tires were rated for 44psi 15 years ago. 44psi is the norm now for tires. The tire mfg has increased the rating on their tires so the recommend air pressure is also higher. The standards and the requirements have changed. If you are only running 32psi in your 44psi tires, you are 1, wasting gas because it causes more friction and 2, you are wearing your tires improperly. If you can get proper wear from a tire with only 32psi on this 44psi tire, you obviously have too narrow of a tire for the width of the rim you are using... Do we even need to cross that line? If you are going with auto mfg recommendations, I shouldn't even consider putting 18's on my stang but the reality is nowadays, its possible and a lot of people do it. Same thing goes for lowering, auto mfg says you shouldn't adjust suspension geometry but how many people here actually think they got the fox body right?

Starting pressure should be a couple psi below max and adjust from there.

I dont like that way cuz its not 100% accurate unless u completely use every drop in the tank and no ones gonna be running that low on purpose...I like Filling the tank to the top, driving ur distance noting how many miles it was and then fill up the tank up to the top again and noting how many gallons it took to fill it back up...then with that figure u can figure out how far u can go on a 10 gal, 15 gal or w/e fuel tank...Much easier and safer way imo

You can do the division with how much gas you put in the tank. Just reset your trip odom. and drive it.. next refill do the math /w the miles traveled and the # of gallons you had to fill it all the way back up.

for math guys like us....

since there is an x in the equation does that qualify as Algebra?
