Gear install, anything else needed ?

Ok so I oredered my 3.73s a while ago and received it a month ago or so.. still im waiting for my car to come out to install it i'm wondering if that's all I need, imean nothing else to buy we just replace the gears and the pinion gear ?

i heard some guys talking about "installation kits" seperatly for gears install, wtf is that ?%

to install gears properly you will need a master bearing kit (click on link below) also this is a good time to rebuild your traction lok(click on link below) and a differential pan gasket. i also installed axle bearings and seals with my install. you will need 4 pints of hypoid sae 80 or 90 gear lubricant or equivalent and 4oz. of ford friction modificator c8az-19b546-a or equivalent. if you buy the traction lok rebuild kit the friction modifier is included....

technically theyll fit but what if a bearing goes bad in 2-3 months? do you want to pay to take it all apart again? thats why most people replace all the bearings/seals and rebuild t-loc

Gotcha, so is there any "official" names but the 2 kits needed ? i'm a noob in mechanics.

Thanks bro but i'm not installing it myself, I don't have tools here and I have a good friend who's a mechanic gearhead. All I want to know is what to give him for the install so he can do it one shot ? i edited it check it again the old bearings will fit but when i installed mine the original bearings had 100,000 miles (10 years old) on them and i did'nt want to take a chance with bearings that old.

ditto on the 4 oz friction.....I replaced the axle bearings, no need to skip them, pretty inexpensive and might as well do it while you there.....let the dealership know if you are going to run synthetic, they have a bottle for either one. Good luck

and 4 pints of hyphoid gear lubricant sae 80 or 90. you might want to replace the axle bearings and seals while the axles are out.


click on link heres a bearing and below it is the seal they sell these at any autoparts store i replaced mine with the gear install because they had 100,00o(10 years old) miles on them and you disturb and/or break the seal when installing gears. i would not take a chance with the old ones.....

yes it does that is the exact kit i used and i am happy with it.... no more one wheel burnouts...

my whole install costed a little over $240 i bought the same master kit i posted on an auction on e-bay for $45 and i bought used 3.73 gears off e-bay out of a ford explorer for $40...

just call the parts local store and get 2 rear axle seals and bearings...

There are some specs for the backlash.....make sure you write down what you hve on each side....it will make it easier when you pull it back out........There was a tool of friend of mine used to measure the backlash........def. will need a crush sleave...and a inner pinion bearing...
