Gears and top speeds...

The most I ever ran for rpms was 4500 in 5th with 2.73's and 215/60/15's. I figured it was like 145-150 on radar but if you do the math it should have been 160+ or something. The math doesn't account for drag, load, resistance,etc......This was a slight down grade with a at the time mostly stock 87GT.

I got to thinking that if I did get my speedo fixed, since it's a 170 mph Saleen speedo, would the needle only go up to 85? My car was originally an lx and had an 85 mph cluster I'm assuming. Btw, how hard would it be to get the speedo working?

It will indicate correctly and go past 85 mph, as long as you have the correct speedo gears for your rear end/tire size combination.

Not sure how hard it is to get a speedo fixed. I know there are speedometer shops out there, but I don't know of anyone who's had a speedo repaired.

I use GPS to gauge my speedo accuracy. With 275/17 Nitto drag radials, 3.55 gears, black speedo gear, my speedo was extremely accurate, pretty dead on at 70 mph. My other two cars, even though they are more modern and have stock tires and gears, have less accurate speedos according to my GPS.
