General consensus- 19" or 20" on the GT?

Funny, I just posted about looking for light weight wheels.

Yes, most the 18s and 19s I've found for our cars is an appauling 22lbs-30lbs even!! Lets just throw "handling" out the eff'n window!

IDEALLY I want 1lb for inch. 18" wheel, 18lbs, 19" wheel, 19lbs. But this is very hard to find for our cars.

Unlike the import boys, who are way ahead of the curve as far as wheel and tire weights go, we have a serious challenge here. Wheel weight drastically affects handling. Any unsprung weight does. This is why I am also hunting for light weight springs or coilovers.

I can find 5 or more manufactures who offer a wide range of 18" and 19" wheels weighing anywhere from 16lbs to 18lbs for the rice burners. However it seems only one or two companies make light weight wheels for our cars. Even those are 22lbs!

WTF?

All I have been able to find us Fiske, CCW and Weld. Not a bad choice by any means, but the styles they have are not 100% what I want.

I have been looking and i noticed that it can be very difficult to find the weight on most sites. Why is that. Also what is the weight of the stock 17s i don't care about getting lighter but don't necessarily want to go much heavier.

Pic of my car lowered on 20's on the way to woodward dream cruise.... We wait all year for this.... spend hours cleaning...... and it rained all morning. O well. It was fun!

I just dont like the big wheels. Some of them look ok, I just want some rubber on my tires. Too many pot holes in MS. I would break one of the bigger wheels.

Metro Detroit roads suck too. I feel your pain.

The cool thing about Mustangs is that we all do them up just a little different than the next guy. Do your thing Bro!!

Love your look!

You'd think the roads would be better in LA...they ain't. About the same to worse around town.

I like those Axis style wheels but I'd probably go for the 18's. Maybe the 19s but all depends on how much I lower the car. I want to use 45 series rubber for the best compromise for road and handling.

18's here. Went staggered fit, 18X9 front and 18x10 rear, with BF Goodrich KDW-2 255/45ZR18's front and 285/40ZR18's rear for tires.

Handling: More responsive, but a little more loose. The tail is a little more frisky now, but the car feels like it handles much better. Or maybe that's just my non-calibrated brain...

Track performance: Didn't do a whit for it. My E/T's and trap speeds are exactly the same as before I put them on, with no other performance or handling mods. Now, the last time to the track without the new tires was in February, and the time with the new tires was in August. Temperature may have played a factor.

Bottom line: I prefer nothing bigger than 18's on these cars, anything larger just doesn't LOOK right to me.

Comfort on 20?

Hello guys! Can anybody tell me about ride on 20' vs 17' rims? I love 20rims on the pictures , mustangs look agressive, but what about comfort? I think my mustang will loose ride comfort on the road.
Please advice I have 235/17/55 all four. But every night go to bed with idea about 20 rims.

I personally like the look of the 19ins but from experience the tires are difficult to get a hold of so if you want something big I'd say go 20.

I'm sticking with 18's as they are lighter then most 20's and you have ample choices for tire combinations.

I have 20x9 Front 255/35
and 20x10 Rear 275/35
It handles good but still needs lowered

i went from ford 18" bullitts to 20x9/20x10's with frpp suspension and eibach sportlines and the thing handles like it's on rails. i definitely noticed an improvement with the 20's. even though they weigh more, the wider/lower profile tires make all the difference...

and yes, the ride IS noticeably harsher, but hey, that's the trade-off. though i'm willing to live with it (for good looks and better handling), i'm sure there are others who would be appalled.

20"s ride like crap

had 20"s on my 06 gt for 3 years, ran across a brand new 19" take offs from a 2010 gt, made a huge difference in ride, sold my 20"s the next day.

+1 just went from the 17s to 20s and they do ride harsher even with the stocker suspension, but 17s on our cars are imo. 19s are nice, but are both more expensive in the wheels and rubber. gl meng............20s ftw!

Everyone's got their own opinion on what looks right/correct for the S197 body style. As for me, I think this body style was totally made for 20s, & that a big, chunky body style needs a big, chunky wheel. Even with 20s, a 1" lowering may still be in order to get the right stance. As for the ride/handling... there IS a price to be paid. It DOES rides stiffer under certain conditions... other times, you won't notice it at all. The handling is a bit twitchier as well, and the rear end will tend to dance around a corner when you encounter broken pavement. Since mine is more of a cruiser, it's not much of an issue.
