Today I let my best friend drive the '89 today, and he was working the clutch pretty hard, and shortly after there was the smell of burning clutch. My question is basic; what causes this smell, and what causes clutch smoke?

Thanks for helpin out a newbie

Just like when you burn rubber, or drive with the e-brake on, FRICTION! heh, clutch is made of a compound alot like a brakepad, when you let the clutch out, it locks the motor to the trans making it move, the cutch is the go-between of the motor and trans. if you "ride" the clutch alot you get that smell, because it is not fully engaged and continues to spin(while partialing locking), instead of fully locking. If your getting smoke from your clutch, it could be a rear main seal leaking into the belhousing, ie..not good. Thats the extent of my knowledge
