going 4.10

i have a t-5, modded motor gt40 top end......
so basically the 4.10's you think it would be a waste!
i was in the car w/ the 4.10 rear end i'm trying to get and the guy was hitting the rev limiter in like no time.....which i guess made the car feel like it had no time to move, it was just like 1st gear -redline 2nd-redline,and thats it...it didn't seemed like it moved as much as a stock 3.27'd t-5 stang shouldve have....
this is the article that talked me into it!
Gears: Advice and Answers - Ford Mustang | StangNet.com

That article is about 4.6 mod motors... NOT our 5.0L push rod motors. Different animals, man.

not much of a different animal, if is going to be serious like making the car unable to impress frineds cause im shifting before the car actually moves lol. which is what it sounds like then its not for me but if its just a neck snapping major shifting required mod then it is for me....and 3.73 vs 4.10 is like 250 hp vs. 270hp come on guys as long as it seriously isnt overkill than im good like cruising at 5k going 30mph

 What were you trapping? I run a 26" (25.7 I think) tall tire and with 3.73s trapped 109.27 and was nowhere near the rev limiter. My brothers car with a 26" tire and 4.10s has been 110 in the 1/4 and the shift lite set for 6000 had just come on. You must have been moving or have a really short tire to be at 6250 at the end of the track...

:jaw:

IIRC, it was 15.0 @ 98 MPH (yeah I know, crappy 1/4 time for that speed - no traction, stock LCA's with worn-out bushings, quads, and fairly new street radials, I had like a 2.2 or 2.3 60-foot). I had my shift light set to 5800 RPM and the light was glaring at me well before I passed through the traps in 4th gear. I think I still have the video of the run up on my Myspace page. This was done on 225/60/R15 Fuzion HRi's. I could've shifted into 5th, but considering how close I was to the end, it would've been pointless and only slowed me down.

FWIW, I plan on keeping the stock 3.27's in my '84 to see how they feel with a T-5 ahead of 'em. The car's not all that great with the stock 155-horse CFI setup and single-outlet exhaust (doesn't feel like it has jack-squat for top-end power), but you can definitely feel that the gears do help it get up and moving from a start and it barks the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. :nice:

IMO, that car will be a blast on the street but you definitely better have your pedaling skills in order. lol I have no experience with nitrous though and honestly that sounds pretty scary for a car on street tires. Unless you plan on not squeezing until you hit 3rd gear. :rlaugh:

my 4.10s should be in by the end of this month.....so ill let you know. i love shifting and in traffic i can just leave it in second or maybe even third and just feather the clutch....im just going to do it...

i'm thinking of a way to get the car to the installers place.....how much you think a tow would cost for less then 6-7miles....

3.55's for the street rofl.....

You would have to force me to put anything but a 4.10 in my car n/a or spray'd especially. Ive had 4.10s for a very long time, with a stock transmission and a TKO 600. The TKO 600 even has the .84 5th gear so I cruise at about 60mph....

Its all opinon based. I learned early on that gear + good tires = profit.

word...i'm the same way. i wouldn't have anything less unless i had so much power it was rediculous.

lol yeah cenok thanks.....
i just figured i dont have nothing major. just in the same ball park as a 5.0 cobra with a little more weight than a 93 cobra, or a lot less weight compared to a94-95 5.0, so
why not max out my gear(aka. my last power mod) and be done....
that way if i ever get a kid with his girlfriend trying to look cool in an 05+ gt or other over "posered-out" sports car i will just have to tap the gas break some traction and let them realize don't risk embarrassment.lol..... i just want something to show off in a lil (no street racing or stupid stuff) just throw a passenger in the seat a little bit.....scream to 60mph. and laugh with someone who has never been a decently torqy vehicle.....
i want to have a serious 0-60mph car, not sos much interested in 1/4 im aiming for low 13's which i should easily be able to get with my mods and good tires.....so all in all 4.10 here i come......
chirping 5th baby:rlaugh:

Hmm, that interests me...

225/60/15s come out to 25.6299" Diameter. With a 4.10 gear you should be NOWHERE near the limiter. I'm willing to bet theres was something else there. The revs seem too high for that 98 mph. Granted you are actually going 100 or so, but even so. Any clutch slip? Not trying tp pick it apart, it just doesn't stand close to the info we have with our 3.73s and 4.10s, and could really sway someones opinion on running the gear or not.

410'S are waaay to much gear for the stock cam. As others said, it renders 1st gear useless!

Well, let me rephrase mine and say useless unless you know how to regulate the throttle. If you only intend to floor it, then yes, 1st and 2nd are useless, but then again my 3.73s equipped stock cammed car is useless in 1st and 2nd if your driving like that. A good driver could make use of 4.56s, a bad driver can blow the tires off in my old 4 cyl Mustang...

Just my .02.

A good driver can use 4.88's also! It doesn't mean that they equate the best over all gear for drag racing.

thats your opinion. I would still never go with anything less than 4.10s if youre really serious about going fast on an NA or sprayed setup.

Yes it is, and it's based on my experience with an AOD. I went 2 tenths slower when switching from 373's to 410's. 4.10's are better for the fun factor driving around town but suck on the highway. And 5spds rev even higher then AOD's.

I'm just going against your blanket statement that with a stock cam 4.10s are useless on the street and saying that a good driver can make use of them. It doesn't equate to them being the best drag gear either, not sure where I said that or where that came from?

Who can blatently say what gear is the best or worst without trying everu gear for every combo? Noone that I know of. Educated guesses work, but then again a blanket statement of 3.55s for 5-speeds and 3.73s for AOD cars doesn't even give an educated guess, just a general response that came from WAAAY back in the day (long before I ever had a fox). As a matter of fact the 3.55 and 3.73 thing has since gone way to the idea that 3.73s for a 5-speed and 4.10s for an AOD seem to be more optimal.

As it sits we have 3.55s in an 89 GT, 3.73s in an 89 LX and 4.10s in an 86 GT, ALL with stock cams. I have driven all 3 back to back on the same day, same roads, etc... The 3.55s are very weak, the 3.73s make a nice compromise, and the 4.10s are the scariest, but the most fun when you know what your doing. To add to this debate my brothers car with the 4.10s used to have 3.55s, car actually has been faster with the 3.55s, but is much more fun to drive with the 4.10s. He doesnt plan to go back either, just build a motor to use the steeper gear...

Case in point, this is all Im saying.
355's for 5spd's and 373's for AOD's apply's to "stock" foxes. It's a proven fact. All these factory 5.0's are the SAME combo, so there is no need for testing! It's been done!
OK granted, for every 500 to 1000 cars that rolled off the assembly line is gonna have a few factory freaks! (Well balanced motors compared to the rest) So these cars "mite" gain a little from more gear, but that's a whole other debate!

Thats where we differ I would NEVER throw 3.55s on a 5-speed car, we own one, it just feels slow. 3.73s in my car when I had the exact same mods felt much stronger, and the 4.10s, even better.

I would LOVE to see the facts that state 3.55s are the best gear for a stock 5-speed car. Now Im saying FACT, with solid proof to back it up. No article with someones opinion, I want something 100% that tells me without a shadow of a doubt the 3.55s are the perfect gear for a stock 5.0.

Also what case in point, because the OP doesnt have a stock car, just a stock cam, and we all know stock cammed cars dont all run out of steam at 4500 RPM.

No arguing, just debating, I would like to see these facts you speak of, as they are new to me, and might change my whole idea on how to make a Mustang fast!

so my car is going to run out of steam at a lower rpm than before since i have gt40 heads and intake?
man im going 4.10 cause i will no nothing else except a stock 2.73 and my old gt that had factory 3.27 or w/e (which i cant even remember how fast that car was) it wasnt at all but i thought it was!!!!!!!!i gotta have a car that feels like its scary, i think my gti vr6 spoiled me it was so smooth and pulled so hard all the way up, driving the 2.73 mustang was almost like driving a my pos 94 v6 5speed but with a little less weight and more exhaust noise it doesnt feel like all my mods have done much, since after the t-5 swap, im hoping the gears feel as noticeable as the t-5 swap.

ps. got any quotes on 6-7 mile tow !!!
