Thats where we differ I would NEVER throw 3.55s on a 5-speed car, we own one, it just feels slow. 3.73s in my car when I had the exact same mods felt much stronger, and the 4.10s, even better.

I would LOVE to see the facts that state 3.55s are the best gear for a stock 5-speed car. Now Im saying FACT, with solid proof to back it up. No article with someones opinion, I want something 100% that tells me without a shadow of a doubt the 3.55s are the perfect gear for a stock 5.0.

Also what case in point, because the OP doesnt have a stock car, just a stock cam, and we all know stock cammed cars dont all run out of steam at 4500 RPM.

No arguing, just debating, I would like to see these facts you speak of, as they are new to me, and might change my whole idea on how to make a Mustang fast!

Well that's what I heard the rule of thumb is when I bought a 5.0 and joined this site.

Is my running 2 tenths slower when changing gears not fact enough?

No, because my friend went slower going from 3.08s to 3.73s, does that mean 3.08s are the optimal gear? I can also name 10 people who went faster going with steeper gears. Too many variables to claim it to be any fact. It's an opinion and everyones entitled to that, but to claim it to be fact, Im not so sure.

I for one never feared the gear, some people do... its 100% opinion.

It is not!! When building a race car gears & cam go hand in hand! To much gear is not always a good thing!

We're talking about race cars or stock street cars now? I know all about picking gearing for a race car, based off (not the cam only) the power band. We just went through it with our low 10 second car. There again are tons of variables, tranny, gear, tire, cam, not too mention how the cars getting air, power adder or not, bottle or not etc etc etc...

The variables are so many you can't even begin to make blanket (put 4.10s in this car because it has this cam) statements.

Too much gear is as bad as not enough I agree, but the idea of this thread was to decide if 4.10s is too much for HIS combo. In my eyes and a few others, it's not too much. Is it the best? How would we know? I just know from MY experience it is not too much gear once he gets used to it. This is where I get my opinion statement from, based off a street car, more or less stock, what gear is an opinion. A drag cars gearing is a factor of hundreds of variables all working together, and even then testing different gears is still the only perfect way to know...

Man if I dedicated this much time to my design work here, I might get something done today.

Cam and gear are not directly correlated. And I still don't understand why you'd use such a high gear ratio that you have to launch in second.

If this is a street/strip car, you have to keep in mind the kind of street driving it is going to see. I live in a city where you get around town by using the highway at 65-70mph. 4.10s for me wouldn't make sense, but it might for someone in the country on roads driving around 50mph. But then again, when I was living in the country, I was still driving around at 65-70.

One last piece: If power shifting into 5th is your plan, don't plan on keeping an intact T-5 for very long. 4th is really your last acceleration gear, so keep that in mind when choosing gears. Some quick math I just did indicates that at 5000rpm with 26" tall tires and 4.10 rear gear in 4th gear you're doing about 95mph. Does that sound about right, 4.10 guys? I figure 5K is a somewhat ideal rpm for running through the traps. Any much more and you'd want to shift into 5th, which is really not a good idea.

"You're"

You can't say that cam is the only thing to take into consideration when choosing gears and vice-versa. Like 25th said, there are too many other factors to consider!

No you don't EVER want to touch 5th gear in any speed contest...

Also the mph seems close to me. For my car I shift it at 5500 and I would much rather be at 5500-5800 through the traps than 5000. Why be right in the heart of your peak power curve. It's better to be just past it. Remember if your making peak power at 5000, you dont want to shift at 5000, you want to run it past there, same goes for the far end of the track.

I have a stock motor with a t-moss ported intake. With the 373's I crossed the like @ 51-5200 rpm. With 410's it was 54-5500 rpm.

shoot, i'd hope i ran through the traps at a higher rpm than that. i don't shift until upwards of 5800-6000...then again, my cam's rpm range is up to 6200. we'll see tomorrow though, my car's going back to the dyno

ok guys thanks for all the repsonses,
but seriously i just have MODS in SIG and im getting 4.10's,
my main goal is a stop light monster, something to scream up to 60mph. do you think 3.73 is more usuable or just easier to control use. i really dont want to kill my top speed to much, i wouldnt mind hoping on the highway and doing 70-90mph every once in a while.....

Yes it is, and it's based on my experience with an AOD. I went 2 tenths slower when switching from 373's to 410's. 4.10's are better for the fun factor driving around town but suck on the highway. And 5spds rev even higher then AOD's.

Mine is based on experience as well, Ive NEVER been beat by anything out of the hole on the street including AWD cars, even when my car was running 14's all day, and I can give that to my choice of gearing and tire. You can theory craft all day about cam specs and gear ratios, but if youre basing it on experience, you should know everything is different on paper than in real life.

if youre looking for a stop light monster you would be dumb to go with anything but a 4.10 trust me.

On second thought, now that I think about it, I might've had my shift light set to 5,400 RPM for some dumb reason at the time, which might explain why I only went 15.0 instead of getting into the 14's (shifting too early). I dunno. I are suck at teh racing. Either way, I know the light was glowing when I was running through the traps, and I'm pretty sure it was visible on the in-car video I posted on my Myspace. (Can't access my account from my work computer, though. )

FWIW, Frankenstang's Capri (with 3.73's) somehow feels FASTER than her '89 notch, but the notch definitely feels more torquey with the 4.10's. I guess it depends on what sort of feel you prefer on the street, if you're not concerned with 1/4 mile times and such. Personally, having driven both, I'd rather have 3.73's just for the all-around compromise, but I can't deny that '89 notch is a friggin' BLAST to drive around town with 4.10's, just the same. (And, again, I'll probably be keeping the stock 3.27's in my '84 for quite awhile, if not indefinitely, as they sure beat 3.08's or 2.73's.)

yeah i just want fun factor something that will launch like nothing else on the street. Im not interested in impressing the mustang guys. cause i would need 800whp and popping wheelies to make you guys impressed. but i have a lot of friends who hate on my mustang saying its ugly and from what i remmeber when some people would ride in the old all stock and poorly running 91gt i had, they would all say this thing is cool, so im assuming they would think the thing is sick with 4.10's lol.......

Build the car for you... trust me. Its fun getting a compliment, but thats only fleeting, building it as you want it (which you might want 4.10s) is fun always.

I'm more impressed with a stock motor 12 second car, than a 900 rwhp monster drag car anyday!
