going 4.10

got a 2:95 t-5 with a 28'' tire. H/C/I and a 150 shot. with a 3:73. im about to step up to a 4:10

Mite as well wake those 4.10's up with a little boost!

You guys saying 4.10s and a stock cam are useless....what about the FS cars that have to run stock cam profiles and are typically running 4.10s or 4.30s? It's all in the combo and what you plan on doing with it.

Water pumps are easy, and not too expensive. Keep us updated!

Is that all your mods in your sig? no headers? Nothing else? I'd say at least high 12s on slicks if you can make it hook and you know how to drive...if you don't have much experience then probably mid to low 13s.

With 258/295 on my car I went 12s on street radials... I don't see why you wouldn't with a tire?

hah i'm just being modest. with as much money and time i've put into this thing, i better be in the 12's! lol. it runs pretty hard as is, but once i get that a/f in check, i think it'll be a for sure thing!

Yeah better to be conservetive... just letting you know what my nearly exact power numbers run.

all the guys here in south ga/north fla run 3.73's and lower (numerically higher) A guy in tallahassee runs 4.30's with a ported 2v 4.6 pi car, and he loves it!! although I really like me some 3.73's lol

Nice. As much as I like the 4.10 for my combo I really didn't think you could go wrong with the 3.73. It's still a nice step up. Enjoy.

ive been in stangs and rode with quite a few gear ratios.

been in a stock 2.73 gears in both AOD and t5 cars. USELESS, not near enough gear and need to pulled out and thrown in a crucible to be melted down to make some higher ratio gears.

been in a bolt on 5.0 stang with 3.55s and a t5, car ran great and felt awesome.

been in mild 5.0 with 3.73s ran great.

i have my car with 3.90s, mine also has a 2.95 gearset trans

been a near stock t5 car with 4.10s ran ok.

IMO if your just going a bolt on or HCI on a 302 or something and dont plan on too much power. i would suggest 3.55s- 3.73s.

IMO its easy to overgear a stock or near stock 5.0. i've been and seen many 5.0s get toasted by cars simply for the fact the low gears put them out of their powerband too fast.

i mentioned the near stock t5 car with 4.10s. IMO the car didnt feel all that fast, it just felt low geared. i dont know about most guys, but to me there is a difference in a TRUE power SOTP gain and the SOTP gain gears give you. the 4.10s in that car just didnt seem to be the best match IMO. now if you had a car with better breathing heads and cam that operates at higher RPM where you can take the car to 6000rpm instead of 5000.

3.73s seem to work pretty good in the cars i have been in with them.

my 3.90s seem to work alright, when i was oringally N/A they worked alright, when i put my SC on and made more power. i hated the lower gears. the car with more power would blow tires off and with the lower gears it would blast through its powerband way too fast. i feel a set of 3.55s would have been a better match for what i had.

now that i have taken the SC off and sold it. the 3.90s seem to work a bit better. but still feel a little to low geared.i'm going to have my turbo setup going here soon hopefully and will be swapping to 3.27s, to load the car more and help the turbo spool in lower gears.

i also rode in a near stock car with a t5 and 3.55s, this car has just bolt ons simple stuff. stock heads and etc. probably a 14 sec car. to me this car ran really good.

granted the car had a really good driver. but the 3.55s just seemed to keep the stock engine in its powerband on the street. had plenty of oomph from the 3.55s but didnt have the "running out of steam" feel that really low gears give you on a stock engine in 3rd and 4th gear. overall the car didnt feel slow at all and it ran great on the street.

so here is MY rule of thumb.

stock car or HCI N/A car, or stock engine SCed car - 3.73s seems to be the best, or 3.55s work great too.

supercharged HCI car making alot of power across the board - 3.55s or so, with that much power you dont need lower gears..

turbo car - 3.27s possibly higher geared if making LOTS of power


if going for a pure drag deal. its best to dial in the gear ratio to cross the finish line at your max HP rpm in your 1:1 gear (or non OD)

I have 410s and like .Also had 373s when it was a auto but didnt feel much difference over stock gears .Went 410s and tranny died and didnt like the auto no fun !Got 410s now with tremmec 3550 and 345hp ford racing crate motor . Lots of fun all around !

My 5.0 had 100% original untouched stock engine... original untouched stock suspension, no weight reduction... and a stock T5.
That’s pretty dang stock.
With 3.73's it went 13.18-13.20 at mid 102mph.
With 4.10's it went 12.96-13.00 at high 103mph.
That's ~2 tenths quicker, and ~1.5mph faster...

I crossed the traps in 4th right where I needed to be... just beyond my shift rpm.
2500rpm (about where I shift daily driving) in 1st gear is 15mph, the speed limit in a school zone, that is far from useless in my book.
To hit the factory limiter in 4th with 4.10's and a typical 26" tire you will be traveling at 118mph.
6000rpm in 5th gear is 167mph...

Are 4.10's the perfect gear for every stock 5.0 owner, certainly not, but, they are not too much gear for the 1/4 mile, they are not a useless gear and hopefully having some "facts" in this thread to combat many of the opinions, folks searching in the future will be able to make an educated decision.

BTW, no disrespect to the folks who gave quality info. in this thread... it's late, I'm tired.

You guys are spouting off about what is better, there is no answer or "fact", only opinion.


WHAT does the OP want from the car, gas mileage, full out accel, or just some fun on the street without scarificing drivability.

4:10's at 75 are over 3k, how much highway do you travel? Spinning the R's is not hurtful to the engine, but it get old fast if you have to go on a small trip and you have to make sure your cooling system is working.

If your an in town kinda guy, they would be fine. You can shift into 5th and get better MPG in town.
