I plan on pulling the manual transmission out of my car and taking it to a shop to get fixed. How do I support the engine with the tranny out? I didn't think of this until talking to a friend but do I need anything to support the engine while having the tranny out? Should I be worried about the engine tipping and hitting the firewall? If so what can I do?

the engine shouldnt move, it should be held in pretty good with 2 motor mounts, but u could always put a jack under it.

You can let the whole tranny hang off the end of the engine unsupported and you won't have a problem. Don't worry about it,...unless of course your motor mounts are so aged and messed up.

I never pulled any motor mounts when I pulled my tranny. I took the trans mount out, dropped the drive shaft, pulled the H-pipe, the 4 bolts out of the tranny that hooks it to the bellhousing, removed the shifter, and disconnected the cables, then wiggled the tranny out. Did I miss something?

Cool had hope to change my oil pan gasket while the tranny was out? making it easier to move the engine enough to slide the pan out. Is this a good idea or should I find a hoist and lift the engine up a little instead of using a jack. I would imagine the jack would be unsafe and unstable. What are your thoughts?

A trick you can do to do an oil pan gasket like the one in the fox is to loosen the motor mounts a little and jack up the engine, but you have to have the other side supported by some means. It works for some if you can figure out a good strategy with it. Any way you do it, you almost have to find some way of gaining clearance between the oil pan and the k member to get the thing off.

You'll have much more room to work underneath if you hoist the motor from above rather than jacking it from below. It's always a good idea to support the back of the engine if the tranny's out. The motor mounts weren't designed to be twisted the way they are when the engine is hanging from them. If I were doing it, I'd attach the hoist from above, and pull just enough to put some tension in the cables/chains - then drop your tranny. The hoist will support the motor. Once you've disconnected whatever you're going to (motor mounts at least), then you can pull the motor up a bit more. Be sure to watch all connections - it's easy to break connections (hoses, wires, grounds, etc.) by pulling up a bit too high -- the jack in the hoist has no "feel" to it. A couple of extra sets of eyes will help you be sure you don't have anything in a harmful bind as you lift the motor. I find it easiest when all is said and done to remove the engine entirely to do the pan gasket.
