I am getting ready to convert to a 5speed and I keep hearing all T5's are garbage. Ive looked at Borg Warners, World Class, tremec, and etc. I was looking at the TKO 500 which are suppose to be the best, but I don't want to spend 2000 on a conversion. My budget is about $700. What is a good tranny for the money and that can handle some horsepower.
Thanks

If your budget is 700 for a conversion or even a 700 for the trans then you don't have a ton of options other than a T-5 or maybe a used heavy duty unit like the TKO in good shape. If you are putting down over 350-400 hp don't even screw with a T-5. Save up some more money and do it the right way once or do it the wrong way once or twice before you wise up. When I did my conversion I put in a T-5 and blew it up at 500 miles. So rather than put in another T-5 I went with a TKO 600 and I've never had a lick of trouble since. The T-5 is a good trans and a lot of people running high power have a lot of luck with them, but if you are putting out a good amount of power you might as well just put something great in and not have to worry about it. 5.0 Magazine just bought a 1000 kit...It comes with new gears and all other parts. The story is pages and pages in length. They show all pictures of all the new parts next the originals... This kit is wicked...the gears are longer and thicker....They said is can withstand 650HP and torque!!!

If you plan on keeping the car for 5 years or more, save your $$$ and get a Tremec TKO 500 or 600.
If you change cars as often as you buy new shoes, get a G-Force or Astro Performance upgrade kit. In 5 years the car will be someone else's problem and the G-Force and Astro Performance companies will be out of business. TTC Automotive, the maker of the TKO 500 will still be around.
