I'm looking to buy a gt vert. The car is a 95 GT white/white with new top and 83,xxx miles. Its supposedly a female driven car bone stock for 7500. What do you experts think.

PS I'm new here so don't flame me for posting this here, I'm a lifelong F150 man myself, but looking for a new playtoy for the wife.

First off, welcome to the boards The price seems a little high for the car, maybe more like 6500 would be right.

Welcome to SangNet.
I agree, 7500 is a little high. I paid 6300 for mine and it was also female driven, and had 78,xxx miles.

Well I broke down and bought it. Now 1st things 1st, what do I replace those foggy head and fog lights with. Also, where should I start my mods first, intake, exhaust, chip, etc... Also everyone talks about advancing their timing, how is this done?

Come on guys, welcome me aboard by giving me the tips to make this pony scream while I'm smoking ricers!

I bought my '95 recently and am going thru the same angst as you...."what to do first".
I DID do the timing advancing and it made a HUGE difference. Not bad for free too! LOL. It says it's advanced 24deg... the sweet spot with no pinging , no probs. Simply loosen (do not remove) the lock collar at the base of the distributor (9/16" as I recall).
You're gonna turn the dist counter-clockwize in small increments (1/4'?), tighten it down and take it for a test run. This is all based on not having a timing light and going by ear. The old timer's rule of thumb was to keep advancing until you ping under heavy throttle. So far, I've had good luck this way, but I did have it checked afterwards. The other thing you may notice is that it will run hotter, so there are compromises. Hope this is some help. Bob

Timing is easy, if I remember correctly, you pull the spout wire, then loosen and twist the distributor while reading the timing with a timing light, set your desired timing, then tighten down the distributor and reconnect the spout.

What is your budget like?

If you just have a couple hundred, a set of gears will give you a seat of the pants increase. A ported intake (by tmoss) is inexpensive and effective. Underdrive pulleys are good unless you have a huge stereo and need all of the juice you can get. Since is is a female owned car, I assume it's an automatic, they work well with a shift kit and a high stall converter. If it's a 5 speed, an aftermarket shifter works better and can save 3'rd gear. Shorty headers and a better H or X pipe will add a bit, an offroad pipe will add more. There are several things that you can remove to help your car's weight.

After that stuff it can get pretty expensive. Superchargers, turbo's, Heads-cam-intake (HCI), strokers, 351 conversions, 460 conversions. Then you start to break stuff, so add a built transmission and rear end.

For free mods, take the dogbone out from under the rear differential. And take the 25lb weight out from under the passenger fender behing the headlight. There is no reason for it so take it out.

Welcome to the boards, good luck with your first decision in mods.

Where are the pics

yes, its an automatic. I'll start with the timing trick. What about intakes and exhaust/headers? What brands will give me the most "bang for the buck".

I think new gears and a shift kit is a little too much for now, but I'm definitely planning on Intake and new headers/x-pipe/exhaust setup. So give me some suggestions for me to gain power and not lose any torque off the line.

SHHHH, just don't tell her. I tried the timing trick, but was afraid to screw it up. Exactly which screw do you loosen to turn th distcap. Is it the two tiny screws on the inside middle, or the screws along the outer edge inside the lower cap?

well, do pulleys, a CAI system, and exhuast... O/R H/X would work very well... should cost clost to $250 for all that, if you install it yourself... PM if you want more details, but I think it's pretty straight forward...

allright, where can I get a good exhaust, CAI, and pulleys for $250. I don't mind doing the work myself, I'm up for it. I modded my f150 5.4 4x4 SCrew with CAI, exhaust, and chip, and I love it, but it is a lot slower than this stock mustang. But now that I got the wife's stang, I have a great opportunity to tinker with it and just pull more speed out of it. She won't ever know the difference, because she is afraid to floor it, so the only time it is truly run hard is every day that I drive it.

By exhaust what do you mean? Are you looking into replacing all of it or must get a new catback system? As for CAI, do a search for how to make one on here with some PVC pipe... works greak, cheap, and doesnt look half bad. Pullies can be found used for around $75 on ebay or in the classifides.

Yeah, its really hard to say. I mean verts may go for more, plus it depends on where you live, what condition the car is in, what condition the tires are in, whats been done to it, etc. etc. It may very well be worth $7500. But I think on average, it should be below $7000 which of course is possible once you talk it down a little. I just bought mine for $6900 two weeks ago and that was talked down. However the car was in perfect shape with 77,000 miles, leather, mach460, 5spd, sunroof, all receipts...all the goodies. Plus it was yellow. I didnt mind spending a bit more to get all of those goodies that I wanted. Just keep looking around and some others may pop up. If not hing else just comparison shop to see if its a good deal or not. Local classifieds and Autotrader.com are good sources to do so with.

Good luck!

Besides free mods, like listed above, your BEST bang for the buck is GEARS! Especially with an automatic. If you put some 4.10s in you wouldn't know it was your own car.

Mequires Scratch X if used every time you wash your car will make your headlights look MUCH better. Even after the first application, you can tell a major difference. This way you can save your money for go fast mods.

Unfortunatly if you want your vert to scream you are going to have to do more than timing and exhaust. All I'm saying is dont expect your pony to be beating much more than civics and accords at first till you get relatively deep into the modding addiction (which will happen). But if nothing else, go on the high side on gears, do an intake manifold swap, and pulleys. These will net you the biggest gains for the least money outside of using nitrous.
