I have my 1990 LX 2.3L sitting in the garage with the cam cover off cuz I'm going to replace the valve cover gasket.

Does anybody have any good suggestions for things to do while I have the thing in pieces?

The engine has been run with and without oil for a while, and recently has been burning oil (leaking onto exhaust manifold, etc, not burning inside the engine).

I don't know too much about cars, all I have is my haynes manual and trusty socket wrench kit.

The previous owner was the same pretty much. Apparently the automatic transmission melted and he stuck in a manual.

Any tips on how to help my car keep running for now (till I get enough for upgrades) would help. Many thanks in advance.

inspect the cam to make sure it isn't wearing badly. If you want to do some work... you could replace the valve stem seals as they leak frequently... but not much reason to unless they were smoking before. Heck, it only takes 5min to get the valve cover off these engines. For me, it is down to a 2min drill. haha. a hose clamp, 4 intake bolts, the 8 V/C bolts and it is free.
