the two times i have been pulled over in my stang....i shut it off immediately as soon as i pulled over and stopped. I know that without the cats they can just smell it and your f**cked. not to mention if u just leave the car turned on and its just idling there real loud. secondly u just have to pay attention...and not be accelerating when u are going past a cop. these cars are quite enough if u just pop the clutch in when going past cops. I havent gotten a ticket yet!! knock on wood!!!

I concur with the above statement...

I drive without cats and just swap them in when the time comes...However, there is a rule where you can get exempt from emissions by making your car a show car...look into that and that could save you some $$$ and even help your case in court...If EPA was so strict about pollution factors than don't you guys think they would enforce them on cars such as semi trucks, and all other industrial vehicles?

Jesus. I haven't had cats on my car forever... Like 4 years. I got pulled over when I used to have Warlock mufflers and they were uncapped. Just made me close the exhaust. I also live in Florida and cops around here don't give two shiots about how loud your car is. Also, CEVTV... Explain to me why NHRA, NMRA, FFW, WFC allow cars that came with cats from the factory run in a class and not have cats? You would think the government would be all over them with millions of dollars in fines (by what you say about each cat missing). If it is a race car, it isn't driven on the street, only at the race track... I don't require cats.. Also, then NASCAR would be illegal and be fined every race day. What about any other kind of racing orginization? Busted. :)

If your car came with cats from the factory, yes you do need them at ALL times. Unless you have swapped the motor, or alterred the car in some way for racing. That is how those pro-street guys would never be accused of that stupid EPA law.

You could also just gut your cats and leave them on the car. My one friend just ran a pipe directly through the cats (basically same as welding a heat shield on).

:bang: I said that it's not enforced. Show me a NASCAR car that came off the factory assembly line. They are completely fabricated AS A RACE CAR. THEY NEVER WERE A STREET CAR TO BEGIN WITH. I just love it when people don't want to hear the facts, and argue about it without doing any research at all.................. I'm done with this topic - everybody else is right anyway................right??

back when i first got my car and was poor i just took the stock h pipe off and took a rod and ramed it down the cats and punched out al the honey comb stuff and hollowed them out

second time i drove my car with the new motor i got pulled over...just told me it was to loud and i need to do something bout it...but i agree with other on this thread about the harleys ect., around here its harleys and trucks..both are super loud...i work 3rd shift so i sleep during the day and its hard sometimes with all the damn cycles going by rattling the windows

Sorry, it's true. Check with the EPA. If it came with cats FROM THE FACTORY, it's supposed to have them. Like I said, I've never heard of it being enforced in a racing situation, though.

Well, those are specially constructed RACE CARS THAT NEVER HAD CATS, so they didn't have them from the factory...............

.
I believe the EPA law states that you can replace the factory cats after 50,000 miles...

Ya.. but mine IS NOT too loud, it polluates too much cuz i have no cats

When you go to court plead stupidity about the exhaust and that it was like that when you bought it. Then say that you fixed it and they will probably drop the fine and say dont do it again. Ask around until you find a catted pipe you can borrow for inspection. Then have heat shields welded onto your pipe.

He never said lemme check, he said i'll check under your car, wait a sec.

And yes, we MUST have cats here (we have no emission tests tough), so i can't debate it in court :(

It all depends, but that sounds like unreasonable search, and you could possibly get this thrown out in court. It also just depends on how much you want to spend getting an attorney, if that would be necessary.

You can't debate not having cats in court, but you sure could take a crack at getting your ticket thrown out.

Hax

I think you should change your title to EPA Spokesman Cev... Jesus, never met someone so up to date on all the EPA laws lol. As for me, I run o/r h-pipe, switch it out when inspection time comes around... yet to get caught, but if I do.. might as well take it lol. I know it's illegal, it's a chance we take. = )

Yup....have to agree with you 100% on that one. They seem to really be a different breed over there. Especially when you tool into Quebec with an Ontario Lisence plate. Man they hate us. LOL

"WTF....what do you mean you can't make a right hand turn on a red light?" :D

i think these cops u guys r talking about just dont like the fact that our mustangs can probly go way faster then them, so they need to do somthing to give out tickets. for instance, i have a O/R h-pipe with the heat sheilds from my old stock pipe welded to my h-pipe, so it at least would pass the visual test, and i got pulled over, the cop said my car was to loud, he checks and saw them and said "oh, i do got them" then he tried getting me for having just my fog lights on in town, he said "there like high beams and blind oncoming ppl" all i said was there 55watts and my stock head lights are 65watts, theres no way, so he just gave me a $101 ticket for not having my front licence plate on. like i said they have nothing better to do i think there just jelous.

You are right.

If a car came from the factory with cats it has to have cats to drive legally on a PUBLIC road.
NASCAR vehicles aren't driven on PUBLIC roads. Alot of the old cars you see at your local dragstrip didn't have cats from the factory so they can be driven legally on PUBLIC roads. The EPA isn't as concerned with recreational OFFROAD vehicles because they are an enormous source of revenue. They want the millions of newer cars on PUBLIC roads today to run clean.

By the way, the Federal fines for running without cats are ridiculously harsh (see the link below). Whether or not they are actually inforced is a different story. Let's just say it makes your $160 ticket look like chump change. I'd hate to be the one trying to prove that I wasn't the person that removed the cats on my car.

Nuff said. $.02

Oh, don't pick on the Harley guys with their loud exhausts. It saves their lives. I sure as hell have never cut one off or run one off the road because I can hear them before I see them. Safety feature, no bull.
